This photo with it's busy composition creates the feeling that those people are all moving and consuming with total haste and concentration. Good shot.

Thanks for the comments. Everyone was having a good time but they do look so serious. I think your comment about focusing on the crab is probably right on. Much concentration required. :) --Best to you, Jan

Love the way the photo pulls you back and forth and over and around the table. You're telling a story here, not just shooting a picture. Everyone is so serious, but then eating blue crabs is a serious business!

Doyle -- Don't you dare denigrate my crabs! (Now that just didn't sound right....) I have had crabs bi-coastally and the crabs from other places are very good but.... they do not stack up to the Maryland Blue Crab and the way they are prepared here. I do like Fisherman's Wharf though and there is a whole lot of fun food and retail places to visit. (Crab House at Pier 39 pretty good; Bubba G. OK too). However, I have found better fare elsewhere in the San Francisco area that is more off the beaten tourist track. --Best regards, Crabby Jan

Don't want to denigrate the Atlantic crabs . . . but it's just a coastal thing. Craved here too. Just try walking through Fisherman's wharf in San Francisco!!! LoL!

Del -- Your shot is the perfect representation of a post-crab orgy. The only thing you can't see are the shells and small pieces of "waste" on the floor and the hands and clothes covered with Old Bay. I assume when you say $25/dozen you mean not steamed. Around here in a good crab house Medium Males (Maryland Blue Crabs) cost $45 to $65, steamed and brought to the table. Funny how folks that have not lived in this part of the country generally don't develop the taste and craving for them like we have. --Best to you, Jan

I love them. I keep a boat near the bay. Do you remember when we could just dip them out by the bucket full? Now they cost over $25 a dozen. I have posted a couple of pic's in the past. Here is one of them. Now I am hungry. Del.

Dave -- Thanks for your comments. And yes... part of the objective is to be covered with seasoning and crab shells before you finish. There is a blond on the right; no blond on the left; she is happily married and lives in California. If you are in Maryland you have to try Maryland Blue Crabs steamed in seasoning accompanied with beer --Best to you, Jan

Now you've done it... made me hungry. One of these days, I've got to try that Maryland thing about crabs.. looks like everybody ends up getting covered in food... btw, you got the phone number for the blond on the left? LOL

AJ -- Thanks so much for the comments. It might look like people at a prayer breakfast but as you suspected, we were having fun. I just did not capture the moment when the guy at the end of the table danced on it, crushing the crab shells with his bare feet. --Best to you, Jan

This is a wild scene (and FULL of aesthetic value!) But everyone looks SO serious... Then again, I guess eating crabs and drinking beer is serious business.
AJ
PS. Noted your observations: "a social event that bonds friends through the ritual of eating with the hands". Yes indeed.

Onie -- Your description is perfect and thanks for the kind words. This one was about as messy to the elbows as you can get. This "feast" went on for about three hours and everyone was covered with Old Bay seasoning, dripping butter and broken crab shells by the end of the evening. We had a great time. I had to leave to wash my hands each time before touching my camera or it would have been pretty gross. --Best to you, Jan

Srna -- Thanks so much; I love getting feedback from you as you are always so kind about my pictures. Eating steamed crabs and drinking beer are a Baltimore tradition where good friends can get together in casual dress and make a big mess. After this meal was over there was a huge pile of broken crab shells and garbage that you could barely see over. Eating with your hands can be fun! -- All the best to you, Jan
