About Life is filled with choices; some simple and some difficult. Picking a watch to wear in the morning is not easy.... #5 in the series.
Just fooling around with the new Lensbaby.

I love the way this image worked out Jan!

I don't mind what lens you used, etc... I just think it works (in my opinion). Warm tones, great light and composition and I love the dark background. Very fine work.

I have been away too long from UF. I miss being here, and lo and behold, I turn up today to find us on the home page :)
So Congrats on the featured critique you had for one of my images from last year being displayed today! And it brought me back to visit you too... I don't forget my friends... I just find time is a difficulty and your photo expresses the fact well! LOL! :) :) :)

Warmest Wishes Dear Jan!
Aniko :)

Doyle - Thanks for commenting on this one. There really is a sundial watch but I don't own one. They are super expensive.
This LB shot was my first attempt and I picked to small of an aperture. I did get some blurring but that was in the dark areas where you do not notice it. However I was pleased with the results so I said "What the hey" and went with the results. I should have lied about what lens I used to avoid looking foolish. But that has never stopped me before!!! :)

Wow . . . I love the Life Choice series!! I missed this one . . . Good warm hues . . . but I don't get the traditional LB effect here. Hmmmmmmmm. And where's the Sundial Wristwatch from our youth? :P

Russell - Thanks for viewing and commenting on the picture. I like doing the Life Choice series because we make these (sometimes silly or easy) decisions every day without giving them much thought. From personal experience and talking to friends, watches, like remote controls, is somewhat of a "guy thing". Picking the correct watch is kind of funny and frankly I wouldn't be surprised in another year or so that I would buy another watch!

Meg - Thanks so much for taking a look and your kind comments. The Lensbaby is fun to use but takes practice -- I have not fully explored all of its potential yet.

I think you’ve done incredibly well with this shot Jan. Yes there are a couple of hot spots but technically it must have been a difficult exposure with all the reflective surfaces to deal with. I think your lighting on this showcases the watches perfectly and I must say I like your choice of watches and can understand your dilemma each morning!
You have just reawakened my interest in the lensbaby, I remember reading about it a while back, I shall now have another look.

AJ -- Thanks for the comments on the watch shot; I think your idea about placement of the straps is a good one. I set this one up lickety-split as I wanted to shoot something with the LB and didn't think it out all the way. The other suggestion is also valid but for some bizarre reason I picked the f/16 disk for the LB and made the sweet spot for the lens way too wide for this shot.
And on the other subject, amen! You can see that discussion spiralling into the depths, can't you?
--Best to you and thanks for a d*mn good critique, Jan

"Picking a watch to wear in the morning is not easy..."

Now THAT'S a Life Choice that sets us apart! Fun concept, fine shot.

And I've just noticed you are playing with a Lensbaby. Can't help here - I've read about them (and thought they might be a laugh), but never tried one.

So I just sat and looked at the comp for a few minutes, and here are my thoughts:

- I think I'd like to see all the straps fading into darkness rather than off the edge of the image.

- Maybe a stronger differential focus on the watch-face on the left compared with the others.

AJ

PS. I think you were right to try to stop the forum thread today. While I agree with the original sentiments, it was going nowhere and had come up against an unfortunately oft-present antagonistic response. I've tried to lighten the tone a little by starting another thread under "Help"...

Onie -- Thanks so much for your wonderful comments! I am having fun with this and have a bunch of ideas for it. However, I want to master it and not have it master me. Not sure how much will wind up being posted but in the experimental phase I will post for feedback and help. In the meantime am doing finger exercises to see if I can work this little puppy handheld.
--Best to you, Jan

Txules -- I will be picking simple subjects this weekend. If the camera is tripod mounted there is no difficulty. If the camera is handheld then you have to place your hands and fingers in a certain way to control focus, swings and tilts.
I think it is just a matter of getting used to it.
Also, it only takes a second or two to change the f/stop by replacing disks inserted in front of the lens but the obvious conclusion is to make a best guess selection for the desired sweet spot size and control exposure via shutter speed. On my camera that means an extra few steps in manual exposure mode. You get the idea.....

Love this Jan... :)

From your *three arms and thirty fingers* comment, lets face it, I'd probably be a little tic-ked off ~~GRIN~~ by now...

From a complete *go with the flow* viewer... I really do love this... The subject, light and tones, shapes and depth Jan...:)

Well done... and keep having fun so I can learn more...;)

Nessa- Thanks for looking and commenting. The Lensbaby is a handful as it takes three arms or about 30 fingers to operate it. Hope to play more with it this weekend.

Thanks, Mel. I tried AV mode and the camera defaults to F/0 and vastly over-exposes. I have no way of making a setting to tell the AV mode what the real F/stop is. I have the Digital Rebel XT. I have an older Canon EOS Elan II that might work in AV but I don't want to go back to film.

I just saw your comment to Robin about using manual mode. I use Canon SLR's and both my lensbabies work best for me in AV mode. I find the camera is able to choose the correct shutter speed depending on what aperture disk is used, it just doesn't record the info in the exif. The only time I've needed to use M is when I want a longer exposure.

Once again, good luck, Jan.

Wow, I didn't know you had up to f/16 with LB 3. I wouldn't have picked this as a lensbaby shot at all! I think the hardest thing to get used to is not having total control, for someone like me who is never in control its easier :)

I look forward to your lensbaby experiments, Jan, and there's another choice to make....stay loose and go for f/2, or keep it tight and always shoot for sharp.......the options are always tough.

Good luck to you!!!

Mel

Liz -- thanks for the comments. I am kind of a watch nut and have way more than I need. Two of the pricey ones were from winnings in Las Vegas. I have had a weird streak of luck there (big time last four trips) and have a rule that ten percent of all the winnings have to go to charity. I think that makes for good Karma. I am going back in April and most likely will have another watch! :)

Robin -- Thanks for the kind words. Five extra fingers - I'd rather andextra arm with five fingers and not ten fingers on one hand. I am already a serious clutz and couldn't manage ten on a hand. (Although I would then take up piano).

I'm no expert with the LB but I think it looks great Jan...way better than my first. Exposure (maybe a couple of hot spots) and clarity are excellent...IMO, impressive results and the low light really makes the shot.

I'm thinking five extra fingers would work better than an additional arm...how about you? ;)

Take care...Robin

Txules-- Thanks for the feedback; I am not entirely happy with the results as I am wrestling with the new Lensbaby 3G lens and there is a lot going on to control since the lens provides no electronic feedback to the camera. I chose an f/16 aperture and used the through the lens metering to get an exposure estimate and then bracketed. Focusing with the Lensbaby is a chore but I will get used to it.
