About Alaska is by far the best place in the USA to see northern lights, because they occur in the "auroral oval, which is centered on the northern geomagnetic pole, and which usually passes over Alaska.
Auroras are caused by the interaction of particles from the sun with the Earth's geomagnetic field and that they occur where these particles are channeled by the Earth's geomagnetic field.
