About 'Chchat' is a festival prevalent in the Bihar state of India. People worship the Sun God or Surya. Surya's wife, Sanjana, was unable to bear the immense heat Surya used to generate, and this is the day believed to be the one when Surya's brightness was reduced to suit Sanjana by Surya's father. A day of worship for the God and the Goddess and the day when the lady power, epitomised by the vermillion, finally won.

This is babughat in Kolkata, where all the believers of Chchat assemble on the river banks in the late afternoon and also in the easly morning next week. The day was dull as far as the sunlight goes, can't say whether it was to prove the myth!

(My scanner is visiting the Nikon service center and this was scanned by one of the local photo labs - I see it to be over noisy, do you?)

Never Ending Thirst Of Knowledge Never Ending Thirst Of Knowledge   {K:26} 11/16/2006
Bijit Da,

As I'm from Bihar, have been part of Chhat Puja for almost 5-7 years. This image has made me so nostalgic of those golden times spent in Bihar. Its a very colorful state. This lady almost symbolizes the ambience of Chhat. That color on her head is what you will see everywhere you go during Chhat Puja. Thanks for sharing.

Regards

Good attempt but a bit too tight IMHO. In 'people' pictures especially in an event, a trace of the ambience matters a great deal.TFS,
