About Passing on the inside . . . car No. 50 takes and keeps the lead despite numerous challenges and two red flags due to serious accidents. Difficult shots and new challenges for me . . . although it was a night racing event . . . the lighting was stadium lighting (obviously) but sitting and photographing cars at 100+ mph required me to learn a thing or two about panning. I ruined literally hundreds of shots . . . but got lots of experience!! Wooo Hoooo!

Lisa:
Excellent question (and thanks for the comment) . . . but the answer is . . . you don't. You try to match the speed and I got 10% (or less) on my success rate! To fast and you blur both . . . too slow, same deal. I have a whole new respect for these kind of shots now! Just try to match the speed and I have found the distance helps.

Doyle I <~~~~~~

This one worked out well Doyle, you've really caught the action, by giving speed to this image. The shutterspeed and the dragging of the camera have sorted out a good effect.
Take care my friend,

Klaas

Excellent image. I always wondered how this is achieved. I read how you panned this image with the camera, but how fast do you move as to not totally blur the car?

Thanks Doyle for telling me how to do it. I tried getting the horses to run quickly but they were half asleep! Now I will try the motorway!

Super easy to learn Mary . . . not so easy to master. Simply follow the car with the camera - moving the camera (and your head) as it goes. The opposite of the instinctive "Don't move" philosophy. The trick is move in the direction of the car (no up or down) and not too fast or too slow. Thanks! :)

Thanks Annemette . . . I was spinning from right to left with the cars and, it turns out, if you pan too fast OR if you pan too slow EVERYTHING is blurry!! It's gotta be Just Right! And yes, I was sitting in my own world . . . more Autistic Savant than autistic BTW . . . And I had more to see than you could ever imagine! :)

I'd never know how to do this one, but I love it. The action and the colour. And what I really like is the shadows.

While everybody was cheering and buuing you were sitting their in your own world as an autistic guy:-) Nice shot where you managed to show the speed of the cars due to the blurry background.
Best wishes,
Annemette

This is so cool Doyle...whether new projects or techniques, I love watching you expand your horizons! You CAN teach an "old" ;) king new tricks!
Thank God for digital...if I had to use film, I wouldn't even consider photography as a hobby...too impatient to wait, not good enough to burn the $$!
Take care...Robin

Thanks for the comment Cleveland - Hands on practice cannot be replaced. You're right, without the immediate feedback available with digital I wouldn't have any idea what was working and what was not. Thank goodness for the digital for more reasons than waiting for the processing . . . developing 35mm would have been very costly and useless . . . that kind of lesson I DON'T need! I'm an expert at spending already! :)

Doyle I <~~~~~~

Doyle, this is a great capture and your panning did work. Thank goodness for digital and not having to wait to have them processed. Very good job with this one and B&W works well also.
