Collin:

Just tried HDR recently:

PS CS2 has an HDR function:

I've recently also tried out HDR using Photomatix:

Hi Michael, thanks. No quickmask, I adjusted levels and saturation in CS2. To get the balance of exposure I used a grad ND. I would be interested to read what you have written regarding pano's. I am looking forward to holidays as I am very keen to try stitching along with HDR. Regards, Collin.

Hey Collin,

Great porfolio so far. These shots are really great and remind me of the work of the Timecatcher guys that post on uf. Really inspiring work.

I was wondering if you use quickmask or other PS tools to get to the final result or this is all done with the physical filters.

I love this style very much too, Collin. I notice how I am using the 24mm more and more often ;-)

I have to post many more photos of Lucerne - it seems that I am in some phase of city and street photography. And then, well, let's see!

Regards,

Nick

Thanks very much Nick, I love this style - strong foreground, great depth. I just wish I had time to take more. How is your photography going?
Regards, Collin.

What an absorbing perspective and coloring. You gave DoF a new definition, Collin! I admire thus your f/22 and 10s decision which resulted in almost endless sharpness. Good work needs... time, and be it only the long exposition due to narrow apperture for an unbelieveable depth!

Excellent!

I really REALLY hate to have my address out where it can be read in plain. My code should have been quite clear, pl check your typing. Here it is again.

Yes, 21mm (RF) and 20mm (SLR) were my favourite film lenses. I find my DSLR WA-challenged! If you would like to correspond, you can reach me as roger atmark adex hyphen japan dotcom. I think half-stop increments is a little too fine. Also I find simple additive combination is not enough, you definitely need to tone map, or the result is flat and lifeless. You're right about card capacity though, specially if you shoot RAW. Thanks for the reply on the 11-18mm. Sounds like it will be a good buy for me. In Japan it is the low-cost option, which is nice (for a change).

Hi Roger, the 11-18mm was first investment after going digital as most of my landscapes were shot with 20mm or 24mm on film. I don't feel the reduced size and resolution of the images viewed on the screen does the lens justice. I am very happy with the sharpness achievable with this lens, prints look great. It is not fast in terms of autofocus as it is only f4.5-5.6 but I generally manually focus to the hyperfocal distance and stop down for maximum depth of field. The front element doesn't rotate which is essential when using autofocus and grad filters. On the topic of HDR, I gave it a go in my front yard, I took a series of exposures from 3 stops under to 3 stops over in half stop increments (tripod & remote), merged in CS2 and the results were awesome, detail in every shadow, no burnt highlights. I can't wait for the chance to try this technique on the coast. I think a larger capacity memory card will be required though with all the extra frames. Regards, Collin.

Collin, following the link to your portfolio after your kind comment on my HDR photo, I see you are using the KM 11-18mm lens. My interests are very much concentrated in this wide-angle range, and have been considering purchasing this particular lens. Can you comment on your experience with it? It looks fine at screen resolutions (lovely result here, for instance), but that's not a very severe test.
