I think that perhaps this would work better as a vertical format image. Crop out the branch to the left as it adds nothing to the photo, only distraction, and crop some off of the branch to the right, just to the left of that bright out of focus vertical branch in the background, as it also is not needed. Focus seems to be sharpest at the feet leaving the head a touch on the soft side. Perhaps stop down a few more stops if possible to bring the head into focus or change your focus point. Nice image.

I really like the colors and details...but what makes this shot for me is the wonderful background that gives this cardinal such a 'sense of place'. :)

Oh, cardinals are beautiful. My mother and I have actually been getting into bird watching lately. There's a Vermillion Flycatcher that hangs around our yard a lot. I only have a digital camera though, and the zoom is nothing for me to get a good picture of him. =\ The lighting in this photo is beautiful. Excellent capture.
