Hmmm, I kind of like the gradient box. It does look something like a box that encases the magnolia. The only thing that takes away from that effect is the branch fade-off. I think by putting the magnolia a little farther down into the gradient, you may get a very good optical illusion effect that it was a real box.
Best,
Dave

Amazing shot. While I like the frame I have to agree with Joel. You don't need and gimicks with a lovely image.

I'm not uaually a fan elaborate framing. But, in this case, it seems very well done. The image of the flower itself is very beautifully rendered. You've captured the delicate color and intricate detail of the flower's center with great skill. Beautiful work.

Jill,
Very nice image. My comment is about the gradiant box. It took a beautiful image of a magnolia, and upstaged it. For my taste, the image would of looked better against a solid black background. The details, and DOF is so nice with this, that it does not have the power that it should have. Know what I mean? Even the fact that the branch is screened over by the white grad takes the depth away for me. The flower against black would look so elegant.
The flower itself is beautiful! Very well composed and exposed!
cheers, -Joel

Jill: This is a great capture. You can almost feel the textures of the petals. The box framing format seems to work well for you and the result is a uniquely creative presentation. The only possible way I can see to improve this would be to center a tad bit better . . . the black areas are larger on the upper two quadrants than on the lower two. And while it doesn't have to be a perfect blossom - the left petal is a tad distracting in that it almost looks cut off . . which is partly what draws attention to the placement since it appears crowded. A great and very creative image altogether though.
