Q. New to Medium Format

Hello all,

I'm new to medium format as well as usefilm.com and had some questions regarding lens choices. I know you can't tell me what to get, but I would like some ideas. I currently use a Canon 5D and a 24-70mm 2.8L as my primary landscape tools. I typically stay within the 30-50mm area. I've had my eye on the Mamiya 65 F4.5 C. I spend a fair amount of time photographing the Florida Everglades, but occasionally (when I can afford it) I go to the mountains. The other lens I've been thinking about is the 90 F3.5 KL L. Sorry if this post is a bit long. I might also mention this will be my first lens purchase for my MF outfit.

Denis,

I have a Mamiya RZ67 which is about the same as you have and have a bunch of lenses for it. I assume you are shooting it as a 6x7 format. For normal shooting the 90 or a 110 is pretty much the standard lens, the equivalent of a 50mm lens on a 35mm camera. It is a good general purpose lens.

Take a look at a 50mm lens if you want something a bit wider. You can get a good near far perspective with a 50mm lens. Going the other way, you might want to look at something in the range of 140mm as a short telephoto or portrait lens or a 250mm if you want something a bit longer to capture those far away landscapes.

There are all sorts of lenses in between those mentioned but if you get a 50, 90, and 140-250 you should have everything covered for normal shooting.
