I agree, raise the legs and lower the center and it will be a ton more stable

Guess I didn't Log In under my name....sorry guys! Last comment was from me: Kari Reed. I figured I better let everyone know, otherwise someone might wonder what the heck is going on. I have not changed my name...haha!

Thanks everyone for the comments. For anyone that asked it is a Bogen 3021PRO. I love it! Best gift ever! My Dad informedd me about the leg thing too! I guess I just used the centerpost as a convenience. I am defintely going to keep your comments in mind during my next adventures in shooting! Thanks again!

For once the amateurs were right, james :) Extend the center column only after all the legs are as far as they can go.
You don't look too happy Kari, or is that because someone else is using the camera ;)

Kari, Don't listen to these amateurs. You do it your way. And take lots of pictures. Glad to have a face to go with the name. Welcome to our club. 3021 right? Nice camera too.

David is correct the center post should be used as a last resort rather than a convenience.

Instead of raising the centerpost, extend the additional leg sections. It will be a lot more rigid that way. When the legs are fully extended and the column is down, the camera should be very close to eye level.

A great tool, but you'll find it more stable with the centerpost down. With a long lens like that, slow shutter speeds are not forgiving. I've tried every trick I can think of, including electronic release, mirror lock-up, weight from the centerpost, and kneeling on the ground with only one section of the legs extended. Wind has been my biggest problem, and the only workable solution seems to be a beanbag. That said, I've found a tripod to be my best assistant, and I'm looking to replace it with the most stable one I can find. Happy shooting! By the way, nice lighting, and a good choice of background.
