This is the main claim to fame of Grenada, besides the old town: The moorish palace fortress called Alhambra. I think Grenada was the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain, until the mid 15th century or so. Unlike the Alcazar in Seville, which was mostly a palace, this building has a true set of barracks, fortified walls and tall towers for defense. It also has the intricate decoration and glitter of a palace in other parts of it, as well as a really nice garden. It is overlooked by the Sierra Nevada, rising 3200 metres or so above sea level. When I took this photo it was late mid-June and there were still people skiing at the top, and this is pretty far south in Spain!!
