I'm also looking for that amateur timeless feel in my new work - I am in love with that style. Personally, a pretty picture sometimes is easier to get than that raw purist photograph. Check out Nan Goldin's work. I think she'll inspire you as much as she's inspired me. In my opinion she's the queen of that style you're looking for. As for a nice colour stock I like Fuji Superia 200 or 400. The film is a cheap consumer stock but to me bears an old look. It's hard to explain... but you should see the "cool blue" and soothing skin tone results you get from that stock. And with a little PS or print manipulation, I think you'll be able to acheive that look you are seeking.
Thanks, Stephen; I shot these all at arms length just wading in the water with the kids playing. This was done with an old goofy 120 camera, the only controls are f11 or f8, hence the 50 speed film. I'm guesing from the results the shutter must be a 60th. The photo store has some Hungarian 25asa I'm going to try, and some Velvia. I'm after an amateur, timeless feel. Tough to put any filters on these old things. I got some NeoPan on someone else's recommemdation, will try sometime. Know of any 50 speed color neg?

Love this picture and love even more you're a Ilford PanF 50 fan... That is some of the best B&W stock I've used. Actually, I only use two now. NeoPan 1600 and Ilford PanF 50. Two awesome stocks with great contrast. Both work wonders with a red filter.
