Hi Mike! Great timing, indeed! 2 metre wingspan, WOW ... the positioning of the wings is so beautiful here ... bet this meal keeps the eagle satisfied for some time! Thanks for your comment - have now added the ugly original

oh, ooops. Will change that after this, cheers. I still use the MZ for slide shots, I don't "do" standard film anymore, it is all digital and slide now. I use the digital to set up good slide shots when I have my tripod handy for those longer exposures, but I have found that the quality of the D* ist "s" (that is the model I have) is quite good. as long as I remember which ISO setting I have it in!

As luck would have it, I had a helper on this shot who fed the bird and scared it off occassionally too.. he he he he

Hi Alice, I actually use a screw on attachment to the lens (manufactured by Vision Optics which allows macro shots, but also converts a 28mm image to (I think)about 18 or 20mm (almost a fisheye perspective), which means I can capture wider landscapes using a standard 28mm, I have to be careful using it in that capacity as it really throws some curvature of the earth into the mix, and you can see considerable loss of clarity and focus on the edges of the shot.

This is beautiful. Reminds me very much of the work done by (the late - both of them) Olegas Truchanas and Peter Dombrovskis, for whom much of their photography was done in the amazing Tasmanian wilderness.

Dombrovskis also made it to the Antarctic!

Hi Mike, you seem to like birds (so do I)

Hehe, you might want to edit the location from USA to Australia? Unless this magpie flew all the way there? )

Interesting, and original, effect of the small hole on the image of the magpie. Almost like a pinhole camera! Well captured, how did you manage to feed the bird and keep looking through the viewfinder?

So you graduated from the MZ to the *ist-D, how did you find the change? I had the MX (an older (c. 1976), fully manual version of the MZ I think!)

Cheers,
Alice.

Hi Mike,

I like this perspective very much! It is quite original, and the dandelion seeds scattered around the dragonfly make it a piquant image also.

What macro attachment do you use with your *ist-D? I have just bought an *ist-DS, which I believe is the next-gen. I'm still experimenting with it, and using my old manual lenses, one of which is a KAX x2 teleconverter, which also can use macro - time for me to give it a go!

Best wishes, Alice.

We have not yet met on the pages of "Usefilm", Mr. Frakes, but I can see from those of your photos that I opened and I opened quite a few, that you are a nature lover, especially when that nature is free and unharmed. Thus, for instance, I loved this excellelent photo of the "little fella", as you called him was not shot and got away free. Like you, I don't like seeing caged animals, even when they make good photos, like yours.
You are, of course, invited to read my bio and pay further visits to my portfolio.
In the meantime I thank you for your very kind comment on my "Sunrise over Aqaba."
Best egards,
Dr. Rafael (Rafi for future communications) Springmann

Hi Mike,

I love the goannas we have here in Oz! I think this fella is a Lace Monitor (Varanus varius). Here in Broome, where I am for the next couple of months, there are several species, including the beautiful Freckled Monitor (see photo).

I have to agree, the crop is a bit tight bottom RHS.

Best wishes, from a fellow *ist-D(S) user. I only got my new camera recently, so am still getting familiar! Do you have the original *ist-D?

Cheers, Alice.

Unfortunately I do not have a lot of experience in that field.. Are you using digital or film? with digital you will be needing to be wary of the white balance settings, I don't know how bright the sets will be, but if you have a light meter that will help you, and going by my camera, it sucks up a lot of juice with the flash, so I think a flash gun (with its own batteries) mounted on top would be very useful too.. as for apertures, the books say f8.0 and f9.5 are good for DOF in portrature, but i get the feeling you might be moving and taking shots of movement? There are some great photographers of fashion on this site, dare I say check out some of the well lit shots on the nude and fashion site, the photographers that post there will be able to help you I am sure.

Thanks larry, I have been practising for the last year on flying ducks, geese, eagles and well, pretty much anything that moves...

I found with this one I had to prefocus, and follow and wait til he dropped into sharpness, so I picked an area of ground in front that was the same distance and panned and followed him all the way in, I managed to get quite a few great shots like this, some were still a tad blurry, but this one was one of the better ones.

Hi Mike, I am against the caging of animals also. I don't think the "modern" zoos are a cure for this problem either. The man-made habitats are too small. Thought provoking shot. Well done.
