Yes, trying to prevent people and boardwalks from getting into the frame often limits your choices for composition at Yellowstone.

It is indeed Grand in the background.
I did have to wait several hours before it erupted, but it was worth it.
Caught Grand in between 2 eruptions of Old Faithful, and got far better shots of the second one from the top of the crater basin than from the boardwalk down below during the first eruption (the boardwalk and people nicely hidden behind landscape features).

Ah - Crested Pool. I love this one. Echo Hugo's thoughs, a bit more to the left, but necessary to remove the people.

By the way - the gesyer in the background is Grand Geyser... It is the largest predictable geyser in the world and I believe only erupts twice a day. You seem to have caught it at just the right time - during a massive burst.

Many people may overlook that detail, but I find it overall especially interesting and great in this shot.

Here is a comparison for compare/constrast...

Hi JT, This is an awesome photo. expertly composed capture of the geothermical activity, although one could argue that you could've panned a bit more to the left, or crop off a small strip on the right. The apparent absence of people and tourists is a very nice touch, not disrupting the wonders of nature. Great shot, excellent tones.

Cheers,

Hugo

Gosh, an inviting hot bubblebath.

Very, very nice shot Jeroen, love the colors of nature in Yellowstone park USA.
You're a lucky man to have had this oportunity to see it all.

NICE JT. Love the color and the wisps of steam with the geyser in the background. Really well done.
