About The hard faces of Australia. These people have lived all their lives on the land and look much older than they really are. But they never complain. They love what they do and are always willing to show others. And yet, even with swollen sunchapped lips these masters are willing to smile for a photograph. Many of them didn't want to be photographed but did so without complaining. They all posed exactly as I wanted and then in turn they told the stationhands to do as I tell them. They obeyed although you could see they were rather embarassed to have their photos taken in front of the farmowners. The stationhands say very little around their bosses. They hold much respect for them.

Once the bosses were out of the way the stationhands relaxed and laughed. Some of these men run stations over 100,000 acres in size. The amount of stock they run is incredible. Most of them use helicopters and ultralites for mustering as the land is so cruel at times. The heat radiating off the ground is searing. I have to admit that I have now gained quite a tan and lost much weight from running through paddocks to get in front of the horses for the shots.

More images and tales to come. But I must say that I have a lot of respect for these people.

I know this image is not everyones style....but the hardness had to be shown.

Amazing!!! I relate this photo to my grandpa who was a farmer for many many years. He has a similar hardness to his face, but is soft and squishy inside. Well done! A perfect capture!!!

Imagine the awful hard work this gent has done.
Yet, he is a beautiful man because of what he has done in his life. ( please_ I do not play both sides of track either-you know BI-.
Excellent photo

Very powerful portrait, Judi, I am glad you share this with us. Technically perfect, with all the pieces of beard and the glitters on the skin, and your story makes it very true, moving. Looking forward to the others to come. Best: Gyorgy

Hi Paul. Thankyou so much for your flattering words.

This image was taken at 2-39pm in full sun. It was a very bright day. I did have the assistant use the gold reflector on him.

I did remove the background in PS during the grunge effect. I had this image in mind for the whole two weeks and finally found the face that I wanted so set it up as such.

I am including the original here for you to compare. The small size doesn't do it justice.

Thanks once again.

Judi

Oh Judi.
This is National Geographic in its scope:
-honest
-unpretentious
-dramatically lit
-nothing but subject
(and to borrow a basketball phrase, "nothing but net").
You nailed it, girl!!

so, tell us...black velvet as a background, or was it removed in PS?
gold reflector? time of day?

AWESOME!

Great portrait, Judi. You have the expression of this man just as you described the life, hard but fulfilling; even joyful. Thank you for taking the time to describe the dynamics of taking the photograph. Not only helps us understand the photograph better but also helps us learn from one another. Rodney

Luke Luther   {K:14693} 11/13/2005
perhaps not everyone's style Judi, but this photo is certain gritty and realistic. not everyone could have soft lighting and reflectors. this is a working man...one who appreciates what he has and what he can do. a good interpretation of his reality...hard lighting and all.
