About Strawberry Poison Dart Frog, La Selva, Costa Rica. I learned a lesson photographing these little guys. After finding one, I grabbed it, and placed it on various leaves to photograph it. It was suitably hot and humid, and I was perspiring heavily. I wiped my face with my hand to keep from getting perspiration on my camera. All the sudden, my lips went numb, and I realized that the toxins from the frog were on my hands. My lips and tongue stayed numb for about 10 minutes. From that time on, I used a film canister to grab poison dart frogs, and washed my hands if I handled them!

Very funny story, and an excellent picture as well. It must have been difficult for an Alaskan bear like yourself, sweltering in the rainforest just north of the equator. I'd love to go, but hate that wet heat. Give me an igloo any day.

You are very lucky. These frogs are the most poisonous animal on this planet.

You lucky you did not grab the Phyllobates terribilis Which is a larger species and deadly. the toxin from this species can kill ten grown men.

This is a excellent shot.

I did know that these little guys had toxins, but I was surprised when my lips and tongue turned numb. One note of interest: if poison dart frogs are kept in captivity (zoos) they lose their toxic compounds. Apparently the toxins come from food they eat, and lacking their natural foods, they also lose the toxins.

I know I shouldn't chuckle at the story but I can't get past you perspiring. Coming from Alaska anywhere else in the world would be hot. :) What a wonderful little froggy to find to photograph. So much colour. I guess you should have consulted with Yamil beofre shooting this one then he could have warned you about the toxicity. I love this and into my favourites it goes.

Oh by the way....I don't know how far your interest in aviation goes but I've posted a couple of shots of the Space Shuttle Discovery you might be interested in. More for subject matter than photographic quality.

Cheers - Ann :)

This is a very good shot and a very nice for Yamil, I'm sure this put a smile on his face.
Thank you for the about....very interesting...I most likely would have been scared to even pick it up.
Steve thank you for the recent Staff Choice, never made the front page so it didn't get any extra attention buy that is ok, just having a shot recognized by you was very nice.
I'm leaving uf after this weekend and this award did mean allot to me.
Wishing you the very best.

Great background story. Rather comical on one hand and rather alarming on the other. Beautiful shot.

This is so kind of you Steve.
Thank you very much for dedicating this beautiful image to me.
Superb bright colors and dof. I really like it.
The texture is so impressive that I can almost feel it. But I am afraid to touch her because I know they are poisonous.
These charming little guys are among the most charismatic, photographed and representative animals from Costa Rica. You can almost see them in every brochure. But yours is better than most the shots that I have seem. I will include this one among my favorites.
Plese take a look to my Dendrobates pumilio

I love them and hope to find them next time I visit my country.
Scientist believes that heir toxic skin and warning coloration may have evolved as antipredator mechanisms. (Janzen D, 1983).
For those UF interested, La Selva is a 3,900 acres of tropical wet forest. One of the OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies) biological stations located in the Caribbean slopes. It?s truly a paradise for nature lovers. Steve, I am glad you visited this spot.

This preserve was originally established in 1954 by Dr. Leslie Holdridge, as a farm dedicated to experimentation on mixed plantations for the improvement of natural resources management. It was purchased in 1968 by the Organization for Tropical Studies and declared a private biological reserve and station. Since then, it has become one of the most important sites in the world for research on tropical rain forest. Over 240 scientific papers are published yearly from research conducted at the site.
