About This one is dedicated to Mohamed Banna. Today I went out to seek some more sumac plants, and while I was taking a picture, the sun came out, and it produced these incredible shadows, looking like dancers. I couldn't believe my eyes! I took a number of shots... there were roughly nine human-like shadows - therefore: the Nine Muses. The Muses were said to inspire artists, poets, and philosophers. I've included another crop below with all nine figures. Hope you like it!

seredipitous, perhaps, but you have excellent sight to have recognized this for its own potential. Luke

Lovely photo! This would make a nice framed poster to put on the wall. Wonderful, hoe the light creates those shapes on the leaves. You've seen the figures and understood to photograph them to share the sigth with others. This is one of the main things photography is all about.

This is incredible Ina. The colors are so rich and the shadows are so deep. It took me three times to look at it (just enoying the colors) before I saw the people. WOW! They look like women holding baskets up to their head - or dancers.
This is fantastic.

You must have had a lot of rain there to have to hang out all those leaves to dry again. (just kidding) Wonderful light and shadows in play here. I love the way the light makes the veins in the leaves illuminate. Beautiful image. Cheers - Ann :)

Thanks for your comments, mundh! I think in the large crop I lose some detail. But it was hard to decide which one to post, so I posted both.

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 10/27/2005
Thanks for being so kind, Kathy! I could do better with a faster lens, spot focus, more megapixels, etc. etc. When it comes to post processing, it really deteriorates from the original shot. I'm not using RAW...yet. For this one I had to increase the contrast a lot, to make the figures more obvious.

Kathy Hillard Kathy Hillard   {K:25721} 10/27/2005
Actually, Ina, I choose the wrong word...what I meant to say was "right camera OPERATOR!" Obviously you are doing amazing things with WHATEVER camera that you have!

I like how the light created this effect of shadow outlines on the leaves from the back to those infront of them. Rich colours.

Hi Susie, I use mine in P mode with a single central focus point (I really miss the spot focus - the Panasonic and all P & S have spot focus, this one doesn't). The Auto mode really has a mind of its own, LOL!

Susie OConnor Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 10/27/2005
Hi again Ina. I never use auto focus...when I first got my rebel I discovered manual and have never looked back. I forgot that my camera had auto focus until my husband used it and forgot to switch it back to manual. Talk about wierd...like it had a mind of it's own!

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 10/27/2005
Thanks Jim, I think they're beautiful plants in the fall, some are bright red, some are striated with green, and some are dark maroon, and orange. I quite like them!

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 10/27/2005
Thanks Linda, it was a special moment! Do you have these plants over there?

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 10/27/2005
Many thanks, Susie :) I'm having an awful time with my Rebel, it refuses to autofocus lately (it rebels!) - I know you have the same camera. Mine has been recently repaired. I'm dreaming of a 20D and a better lens for macros...

Ina Nicolae Ina Nicolae   {K:44481} 10/27/2005
Thanks Kathy, I think it was the right moment, but the right camera... hmmmm. It's been repaired, and now it's playing games with me. The autofocus is spotty, and refuses to work lately, so I use manual focus. Time for a 20D I think... depending on budget :)

Now those are some amazing shadows, Ina! Talk about right time, right place (right camera!)!
Great colors! I'm glad that you attached the whole picture, but I do like the crop that you choose. Way to go!

Who would have thought a lowly sumac could look so beautiful. You have made a masterful composition out of it.

  0

Susie OConnor Susie OConnor   {K:34798} 10/27/2005
Wow Ina...right place...right time. But you still have to have the eye to see this type of image. Wonderfully caught and displayed. I can almost imagine watching these dancers from behind a thin curtain...practicing for the show.

You are so right, Aram! Two rows of Muses! It was a strike of luck. I was looking for a branch like one I photographed a few days ago but didn't post, because it was a tad moved (learning from mistakes). So I was scanning the different leaves, and I happened in front of this one, and the sun came out at that moment. I would have otherwise missed it, by itself it wasn't interesting. The day was very cloudy, and the sun came out maybe for one minute, and there it was! Thanks very much for your great comment! Best regards, Ina

Let me disclose a secret: they are 18. Nine of them dance in the morning and the nine others in the afternoon on the other row of leaves. Their life is top boring: dancing together but alone in their incubator-like compartiments and for a few weeks before leaving their branch for becoming mouldy!...

Very nice shot, Dear Ina, the "Pattern-Hunter"!

Thanks for sharing.
