Neal - Thanks for the comment. Peoria is to the west and slightly north of Phoenix. Sun City is on the south west side of Peoria, and a large portion of Glendale's western boundaries is on Peoria's eastern boundary. Peoria encompasses about 170 sq. miles. Our northern boundary takes in all of Lake Pleasant, and the northwestern boundaries of the City go out to 152nd Av. Our population is approximately 140,000-150,000 thousand. (Population was 12,273 in the 1980 census, and about 14,000 when I started working in the Peoria City Clerk's Office in 7/83 - retired 1/04 after 11 years as City Clerk.) You are right - it is amazing what all you can see from your own backyard. Jan

Isn't it amazing what you can find in your own backyard? Delightful photos and the story that goes along with them is fun too. I have to look on a map to see where Peoria is. I lived in Tucson for 12 years. Nice work.

Thanks for the comment, Darlene. I don't know whether they were one he and one she or what, BUT the one in the back was sticking very close to the other one - sort of a "whither thou goest, I will go". Guess that is why I was lucky enough to get both in a number of the shots. Too bad all of the shots didn't turn out very well - they were moving fast! Jan

No she doesn't have UF site, she not that into it.. We are going to the Verde Valley railroad trip on the 19th to shot the color. She needed something better that her old 3x and something anti shake... she really love it. And yes she is running in cicles but having fun.. between teaching at Clay club and on the board of directors at Silver club, Photography is down the list (;-) Don

Oh sure Don - you probably just want to capture her moving fast and whirling around trying to keep these guys in camera - much less in focus! Practice in frustration is what she might get! Ask me how many shots I have of my lantana with the subject off camera - and not even a bee, fly, or decent flower to do anything with. Does Carol have a portfolio?

Thanks Don - they weren't around today, so perhaps they have already left town for the season. Then again - they could be feasting somewhere else. Yes, I was lucky to have gotten as good a shot as I did. Do wish it was clearer and closer tho. Maybe next time. Jan

With the 70-300 you can sneak up on them from across the street, outstanding lens. I understand about cropping from a larger shot, I've done that many a time. I think the catch is awesome Disney couldn't have done better.

Thanks for the comment Margaret. Glad I brought a smile to your face. Your mental picture was really close - at one point I think I spun in circles trying to keep them in the viewfinder. Got one shot - very fuzzy (camera shake do you think???) where they are dancing in the wind with the blue sky and several birds in the background. You can tell which are the butterflies and which are the birds, but no way to PS the photo to make it a candidate for an upload. Oh well, just will have to try again. Jan

Ellen - thanks for the comment. FYI, the upload was at 100% as it was just an enlarged crop of a tiny portion of a much larger photo. The photo before crop was of almost the entire lantanta bush (at least 6-7' across and 3-4' tall). Plus there was a large portion of the wall and neighbor's queen palm in the shot. Tried to get closer, but difficult "sneaking up" while walking on gravel. Not sure if they sense motion or air current changes or what - but just as I got a little closer - they would take off! Tomorrow I might try again setting up the tripod and putting my 70-300 telemacro lens on and see what I can do with that. Tried it before, and the darn things kept landing on the backside of the bush! LOL

These three shots made me smile, I had a picture of you chasing all round the garden trying to get a shot of them when settled. I bet they kept settling in the worse spots for light/hidden by leaves etc. Hope you went and had your own 'cup of nectar' after your efforts :) Margaret

Excellent catch Jan. Did you look at this at 100%? It would be great to see a close up of these guys. This is such a wonderful shot my gosh even with 40 shots you timed this well. Well done my friend.
