Good to hear from you, John. The referee's attire is not actually a uniform although it is fairly strictly circumscribed. The patterns (and footwear, if any) are largely dictated by the rank you have attained. They also have to take an official Referee Name. If the ringside judges decide the referee has made an error, he may be demoted. He also carries a short sword for defence and is legally entitled (even today) to kill a wrestler who attacks him. Sort of an equaliser...Weird sport.

Roger - say it aint so, an ARGENTINIAN sumo wrestler? Whats next, a Polish pope? opps that one's been done already. Very nice series and thanks for sharing. I am wondering, is the referee's atire a uniform? I seem to remember them always being green with gold circles.
Sorry to have been away from commenting so long Cheers - Jb

Thanks, Gib. I didn't notice the ugly green cast until after I uploaded it, alas. And I'd hate to lose the encouraging comments, so I guess it stays as it is...

What I like here is the srtucture above the sumo ring. It has the beautiful lines of a shinto shrines, this being my favourite pattern. My goodness! All those people have to sit for hours the way you sit on tatami???? I pity their legs! Gabriela

beautiful, as thumbnail thought this a sprit house. too cute forwords this house of combat. Square format at all dificult to get your head around? I've always thought it'd be more instinctive. This would be an exciting first trip with the new eye.

it's often broadcasted in Euro sport channel, it is very interesting and your picture is well capturing again this event, and with different lens again showing another angle, another excellent composition very well done, Roger

Another great insight into a very Japanese institution, Roger. You've captured all of the atmosphere with the wrestlers, the ornate wooden superstructure, with flags, and of course, the packed "Full House". An effective perspective from your upstairs seat.
I used to watch the Sumo bouts on channel four, years ago, and it was strange but compelling.
Regards Colin

At last, a comment on my orphan Sumo picture! Thank you, Chris, Oh most faithful and longsuffering of commentators! I thought they would be sure to generate interest and comments (and one of the other two has not done too badly). Chris, Sumo has to be experienced at the arena to get the full impact. It is not something to watch for a moment or two on TV... It can be quite rewarding, though. A nice, if rather expensive, afternoon out. Currently, the most promising young wrestler is a Bulgarian, the first European to reach his rank. He almost defeated the reigning grand champion--a non-Japanese from Mongolia. So it is gradually becoming an international sport. We already have Argentinians and Russians...

Wonderful image, Roger!! And a fascinating 'about'. Personally, it's a sport I've never got into! Best regards, Chris
