Looks like this little tree will make it in the big world. I like the way the fence keeps it safe. Don.

Janet, yep, Sammy is correct...
The cedar shakes protect the younger seedlings from wind and sun. The mulch provides water retention, and the old fencing keeps the mule deer out. I also use chicken wire around the bottom of the fencing on some select trees to keep rabbits and porcupines out. This Aspen is on it's 3rd summer.... it's on a drip irrigation system but it's still a slow process. I've got over a hundred seedlings out so far, Piņon, Blue Spruce, Aspen, Ponderosa, Candlestick Pine and maybe a couple of Douglas Fir and Engleman Spruce. And a few fruit trees. Trying to keep up with the bark beetles....
"new avatar"....I thought it was a good photo too, lol.

Aw, ain't it cute?
Looks like a windscreen and a deer cage. Around here we don't need the windscreen but we do need the deer cage, an underground gopher mesh, and maybe a rabbit fence.
