Glad you liked it, Sheryl. It is a cold and disturbing subject, but overflowing emotion, texture, shadows, and character.

A very powerful series, Brad. It takes alot of courage to open your heart in a place where so much pain has lived & been experienced. Your work here is touching, without being sentimental - a tribute to the truth of what was, & who was then. What compells me the most is what's underneath the darkness, the dispare, the horror - that place you call hope & that miraculously lives even in the hardest places to breath. Thank you, for sharing your honesty & vision.

Thank you, Mark! We must both be intrigued by the dark and disturbing.... I ran the first series from this place over a year ago, and got the itch recently, to re-visit, so it isn't really a rework of any of my first shots, but rather a return to the same compound...different building. Unfortunately, my excursion didn't last long, and I only got a few photos. I'm thinking about asking for permission to do a more formal shoot, but I know how those requests are usually recieved! I remember your series well....it was riviting, and an excellent compliment to your great skills!

This is great Brad.
very similar to the reworking of my own hospital series. Great lighting and view point. The highlight on the end wall and the light it casts on the corridor wall is stunning. I love it. You have done a great job of reworking this series.

Hi Ina! My guess is that the building is 75-90 years old. It's been abandoned for about 25 years. There are some buidings on the property that are still "active", and thus, the presence of security guards. THEY are the ones who scold and threaten me all the way out the gates.. Thanks for your kind words.. ..Brad

This is one of the best IMO because of toning, darker contrast level, and light...reminds me of a very similar shot by a friend of mine here at UF...it,too,was in an old mental hospital in another country.....you did a good job with the exposure...would make a great bookcover or film promo poster...good work,Brad...gayle

Great series, very powerful images. Hell on Earth. What is the approximate age of the building, and who escorted you out? Very well rendered atmosphere in B&W. I like the entire series.

Thilo, I haven't been carried off....but I've been escorted more than once. The problem isn't getting in, it's hiding your vehicle on the grounds without it being noticed. Next time, I'll have someone "drop me off" and come back at a predetermined time. I would simply call them from my cell phone, but the evil inside the buildings prevents watches and cell phones from working.
Ok... I'm kidding about the cell phones and watches... ;-o ...Brad

WOW Brad, this is a scary one..yes lots of atmosphere for sure. I love the perspective, almost reminds me of my "end of the hall" image, but this one is more serious because of the history. The black tones are perfect for telling the story and evoking that eerie kind of scary feeling, like you almost expect something to jump out or grab you. I like the symmetry, very well done. And the light at the end, for me symbolizes hope, the hard part is getting there. Sometimes when things are very dark it might be hard to have hope, but it's nice to know that it's always there..really a strong image, and your words are deep and meaningful, you have a good heart Brad and it's showing all the time in your work and your words...hugs...Linda

Thank you Biliana! I'm definitely wide awake ;-) I'm sure you're aware that these (and worse) conditions existed in practically every country not too long ago...... Treating mental illness in cruel and heartless ways was not relagated only to America. I'm glad you take an interest in these shots, my experience was sobering and nerve racking. ...Brad

Hi Tim, glad this caught your eye... you're right, there is an "underside" to most things, including people, governments, and nations. If you're interested, you can go back in my portfolio about a year, and see a bunch of shots from a previous "exploration". Thank you for your kind comment, especially about the "verse". ...Brad

I for one am very happy to see this series returning! I love the rectangular theme with the doorway, the window, the light fixture and shadow(?) on the ceiling. There is a very creepy feeling from this, makes me think of my favorite type horror films where you don't see the "monster" much if at all and is more psychological than anything. There you stand in the darkness, but at the end of the darkness there is light-a hope of escape from the craziness. OH and I love the toning. Wonderful piece of work, looking forward to the next posts, into my favs without a doubt~~~

Great work, Bradley. Your breakin effort has produced something extraordinary.
