About Subject background: Flatiron by night, some years agon when the building was free of ads and naked. I like the total quietness in this picture - statics in the dynamics.

PS concept: Some work with the channel mixer again, pretty hard this time with the lights.

some personal note: I'm not quite sure how I will continue with Usefilm - if I WILL continue at all. The decreasing interest is something that really bothers me. Not long ago, I got a lot of quality feedback - from friends and strangers. Now it's just a few friends that give me constant feedback. Most of my friend's list is almost offline at the moment. Some are idle for months now. So how about takting other people onto the friend's list? It's generally not easy to find friends here that have the same interest in actually being a friend. I can really understand people who don't have a lot of time at the moment. Things change. But for me, it's crucial to get that kind of feedback that you think "hey, that was worth the work". For some of the last pictures, I don't have that feeling.

I'm probably taking a break from UF and look into other communities. Or into other options. Please don't take my notes personal. It's just a general development over the last 3-6 months that now breaks free in this upload. Probably a philosophical question as well ;-) Feel free to comment.

So please tell me if you agree to use your photo.

Hi Ameed,

I'm not sure if it's a matter of quality level to give quality feedback. Everybody has a mind. And may express his thoughts. When I comment on an image, it's just my humble subject opinion, nothing more. I'm not a pro nor do I know most of the photography "rules".

anyway, thanks for the interesting words.

Not only is this a great shot but a historical one as well. I doubt seriously that New York will ever look like this again. I think that this one would be great printed and hung on a wall.
Congratulations on the awards, very well deserved.

Very nice image of a famous landmark. YOu did a good job. The wide angle is tough to keep the lean under control. But your image works. I wonder how you have outputted this image, and if you are satisfied with your b/w printing.

As to ebb and flow....thats life. Here is just a microcosm. I have been here and away. My photography work goes in spurts that I shoot, than months that I print.

Best to you....

Gary

Hey Thilo, such a fine street shot and unsurprisingly fine BW work. I read your about with great interest as I had similar thoughts recently, but I really urge you not to leave as you like some others a great source of knowledge and inspiration, take a break and complain as you like but don't leave :)

Hi Thilo,

Couple of things here to say, i would take it all one by one.

Firstly thanx for commenting on my picture, it's a different pleasure to read a comment from somebody as talented as you, It works as an encore,a kind of validation to your own growth process.

Getting to your current posting, Amazing photograph and more so the perspective is intriguing, Is all the lens information there correct?(Not challenging the info., provided by you but just clarifying my doubts)or have you posted a crop here.Very well seen and excellent capture. Haven't yet tried my hands at too many low light's. Just tried once and that i had to do your way(without a tripod);though in my case that was more situational than a matter of choice. Here's the link.http://www.usefilm.com/image/737629.html.

Lastly my honest reactions to your about, first reaction was that perhaps you are acting greedy here, if i would have got one fourth the comments/awards you have got here, i wouldn't have ever dreamt of leaving this site; but then getting back to the ground level and putting myself into your shoes....i am also not 1/4th as talented as you and what stands true or works for me has no reason to stand true for you.
People here have given very introspective suggestions as to why "you" and going by the general impression we all are facing a drought here. It's the summer time outside and seems heat is getting inside people's head thatswhy i learn of some non-constructive participation by a certain section of gentlemen here.
I can truely appreciate what you might be feeling at this point, as even with my limited skills and my limited activity here i find myself acting impatiently here, really getting little nerdy when i don't get some immediate comments on my posting and that's my personal way of admiting how much i value the view and opinions of all the talented people here. Since i can honestly admit here that your skill level is amongst the best here you could have reached a point of stagnation where your expectation level isn't being matched here and in that case you are free to move on and as a person i would be happy for you.But as a learning artist your leaving UF would be a big loss here for people like me and all your friend's who have so generously shown support for you and who feel one with you. Couple of them have even shown the intent of either keeping in touch or following your trail.
Now here taking a leaf from your own book "It's not really about getting admired or something. It's just about a general feeling that friendships are fading away if I don't do anything against it" and this's what has moved me the most. Also to your own admittance" It's generally not easy to find friends here that have the same interest in actually being a friend." I guess a short break as a refresher is what you need here, and for the same good friendship's that you have fostered here you must stay here and let the unfulfilling summer's pass away and then if you still don't find the things going in the right direction for you, you can freely take the next step.

Atlast i wish i haven't been boorish here as this was my first communication and i have written so much, that 2 in terms of suggestions/advice apparently to somebody who has spent more year's under the sun and also has emerged more skilled.

Regards
Pankaj Arora

Hi Zeev,

thanks a lot for your supporting words. It's not really about getting admired or something. It's just about a general feeling that friendships are fading away if I don't do anything against it. Therefore I pile up new powers by reducing my activities here.

best wishes my friend,
Thilo

Hi Carsten,

super perspective and I love the feeling of this "empty city" - Thilo - I mirror your feelings here to a T - UF seems to be a real downer these days with lots of negative vibes and fewer and fewer constructive comments - not from you I might add - - I too feel that perhaps it is time for me to move on to greener pastures or at least to take a break from what I feel to be non-productive site at this moment - i have really tried to push folks to review and comment on others work and have not had all positive replys to my prods and pushing and have had one of my forum posts removed regarding this subject - I love this UF community or at least did - perhaps the honeymoon is over for me too....time will tell...I will continue to post and comment but not with the same excitement ... I still remember the 1st comment I got -- what a thrill...Kev

All of that talking, and I forgot to comment on the image itself...just what I mentioned in the previous comment. Anyhow, I love the central position of the tall building, a perfect example of when centering the subject works. I also like the random rooms that are lit. It's really a striking image~

Thilo, don't let the lack of interest discourage you from posting. Lately there seems to be a lot of debating going on with usefilm, photographer's leaving, and complaints in the forums. Well, I am wondering if we are all doing too much talking and fighting rather than commenting. Afterall that is what drew us all here to usefilm in the first place. This is probably why there has been such a drop. Its easy for some to blame usefilm as a whole, but I think it really lies within us all. Sure Al created this site, but we photographers are the ones who keep it going. I say ignore all of the nonsense and keep posting. Things change all of the time, and perhaps soon people will get over it and things will return back to normal. I look to my friends and associates list to find the images that interest me. I do still continue, when time allows, to look through the main gallery pages trying to find something new, and sometimes find new friends in the process. However, I don't comment on all of my friend's images, because some of them don't appeal to my tastes. If I did comment, it would be like a non beer drinker commenting on the taste of a certain beer. If I have some interest in an image, but I think it could improve then I will say so. In any community as large as this there will be problems-but we all have to deal with the bad to be able to appreciate the good. If some friends stop taking interest in your images and your progress then those are friends you wouldn't want to have anyhow. I guess its just the way life goes. :) Best regards.

HI Thilo! First of all i want to say that it would be sad if you leave UF, also a time resting - i would notice! But i know what you mean and i understand what you say - i have also noticed a change... and also i can see at my self and how i have less time to give a good feedback.

To the shot:
I find it very good, as in many many shots of your. The central place for the house are fitting perfectly and also it?s a good "reference" to the famouse shot of this building without being a copy in any sence, because this are different, it?s a nightshot in the first place. I like the tonal range and the image has a rich character ;D

Well, i really hope that i will continue to see you here! Also, can you senme an email so i can discuss with you about one thing?

Kind regards,
Jeanette

I totally understand what you are talking about Thilo, it is a little frustrating, but my advise is, stop caring about how many comments you get,
Btw, one of the reasons why you might not get a quality comment is, it requires someone at your skill level or higher to critique or to advice, and I know it is the comment we all looking forward to receive,
But how many actually on the site that are equal or above your level, see, this what makes it really hard,
But yet still I wish you wont leave .. there is an alternative, reduce activity and try something else somewhere else .. and if you found a better place, let me know ;)
Like your shot and admire your photography skills,
Regards,

Dear Thilo,
This is the first of what I hope will be many opportunities to correspond. Your photo here is superb. This sort of building has always gathered people's attention. A sort of why mixed with a why not concerning it's use of space. Your shot grabs the building in its natural habitat. And focuses attention to the stature it maintains in the city. Merci du partage.

Hi Thilo,
I like this shot! It has a very 30's look to it. Probably because of the lack of cars and ads.
I wouldn't worry two much about the lack of participation with Usefilm "friends" I'm sure people are coming and going all the time here. The same kind of thing used to happen in Newsgroups. People get dis-interested for a while, then they miss it and come back for new conversations and arguements:)

hi,Thilo.....forgive my lack of regular participation with commenting...i have been putting more efforts into public awareness of current events than giving the higher level of feedback as i once did.....also, the Summer season is less active here on UF from what i have experienced...anyway, i will try to give more feedback when i am here...hope you don't leave, but if you do,please stay in touch with me!

Great archival shot,Thilo....love the clarity, perspective and tonal range from deep blacks to bright white...i,too,shoot sans tripod and find it easy with my heavy Nikon N60...

Hi Thilo......i had to add this as a favorite. I like this area of NYC...halfway between midtown and the lower parts....I love this building and I think your BW capture is excellent. NYC by night....i get goose bumps just thinking about it..I would give my right arm (OK..not quite) to be there right now feeling the september warmth while walking and walking and walking

a classic capture... great night shot as well..definitely looks like something that could be made into a poster.. hey, don't go anywhere, summer is always that way with people and I am sure the same problem exists on most other sites as well..
