About This is a total rework of RainStar posted on 1 March. I think I've learnt a bit since then, and also received lots of constructive comments. So, for the full story, have a look at the original - I hope that you prefer this one!

Once again, there is no PS (except for framing). The image is taken through beads of water placed on a piece of glass.

Main differences are:

- cleaned glass (thx Dan)
- treated glass with Rain-X to get bigger water beads (thx Dan)
- placed the drops individually (thx Dan - but I'm still using a wooden kebab skewer to do it!)
- used a black background (thx Agust)
- played around with the DOF: F3.5 gets a nice fuzzy background of the actual pen tops but results in lots of fuzzy drops as well; F11 gets the drops sharp but results in the actual pen tops coming through much sharper (thx Cameny)
- changed the order of the colours since I reckon I got the indigo and the violet switched
- put the image in a "poster" frame.

Many thanks for your comment, Sameh. The question of the sharpness of the surface is a tricky one - I took many shots using different F settings. This one at F3.5 is the one I prefer because the background is nicely blurred, but it means that only a small area of the surface is sharp. At F11, much more of the surface is sharp, but I find the background becomes too intrusive. This can partly be solved by raising the height of the water drops, but then the refracted images become smaller... All a question of balance in the end.

A fascinating and beautiful abstract. Again, I appreciate the imagination, the patience and the skill that created this scene in reality then captured the image, rather than putting it together with PhotoShop plugins! It's an artistic photo, not photo art!!

wow this is beautiful, the colors and detail on the forground objects against the nice multi colors blurred background is perfect

Well done again,in my opinion i liked the old one, but this one is very nice also, but i wish the surface was little bit sharper.
Best Wishes

HI John I dropped in to look at rainstar again, they are two very different images, I still like both, but the overall effect here is really great. You have such patience - even if I was capable of taking fabulous shots like you Dan I wouldn't think of all the alternatives or have the staying power of trying so many things Congrats on all of these images
