Thanks Vincent. You're right about the time required for post processing. The first post had minimal work done on it to prepare it for a newsletter when I returned from the trip, and the second had a lot more attention paid to it.

Thanks for your comment Hugo. The shot was mainly about the ridge and its reflection, and the ice was a nice foreground element. Based on your comment, maybe the foreground competes with the main subject too much. Your crop sure does give the scene a different feel.

Hi James! Good to have you back! I've been switching between this one and the original post several times, and I do agree that this version is an improvement.

Superb capture of the icy water and scene. Yet, there's something bugging me. Can't quite put my finger on it, but I'll try:

The emptiness and relative simplicity of the scene and composition is a vital element for the atmosphere, I believe. The largest chunk of ice in the water, and it's reflection, gradually fading into its refraction below the water does manage to grab my attention, but when my attention is reverted back to the ridge (which I still consider to be the primary subject) I'm at a loss. Maybe the chunk of ice alone would qualify as a stand alone subject, making (most of- )the ridge redundant. Hope you see what I mean. It's a pure analytic thought, not taking the beauty of the shot into account. And that's maybe just what it is... This shot allows me to scruitinise the individual aspects in stead of forcing me to absorbe the solitude and emptiness of the scene for its intrinsic beauty.

Hope you don't mind, but the longer I look at this photo, the more I feel tempted to fiddle with the composition until I couldn't stop myself... (Per attached) A change in composition does, IMO, change the theme of the shot, much more like your next one I'm about to comment on...:)

Cheers,

Hugo

It's clearly the high quality of this picture, and the atmosphere that makes me comment a winter picture when it's still summer... :-) This is superb, a piece of norway that i yet haven't seen, but i hope i will someday. Excellent photographing.

I do find this version slightly improved James. Perhaps a few more points of contrast according to my monitor.

Post processing in my mind seems just as important as shooting, as well as when going to the light box to edit and choose. Each step can be tedious, but when all are done carefully, I find it gives us the best chance for creating consistent winners. There is just no real way around it, I guess, hard work is still the most important factor regardless of ones equipment.

I am happy to see you following your dreams from reading your bio. A tip of the hat to you for doing just that!! Keep up the good work. Aloha.

wow - excellent. peaces of ice floting on the water are giving the "touch" to the whole atmosphere :)
