About European blowfly on a dead strelitzia leaf. The stance this blowfly took made me think of an streamlined jet fighter. Taken with the 105 mikro Nikkor with a +1 close-up lense up front. Afternoom sun filled in with the built-in flash. Brightness and contrast adjusted in PS. Natural colours.

Exellent fly close up Joggie! Detailed and just enough flash fill without any hot spots. In my opinion the depht of field could only get deeper when one leaves more space between lens and fly.Extension tubes change nothing on DOF, they just let you focus closer( bigger magnification). But focus closer means less dof.You could get more DOF by using an extender(1.4 or 2.0X), because you get the same magnification with the lensfront a bit further from the subject. But by using an extender you will loose a lot of light and the quality( crispness, details) decreases a lot.So i do not think that with this magnifications you get more DOF and more quality. You did a real good job here Joggie!

Thanks for the comment Bryan. I am still saving up for a set of extention tubes, although I doubt if I could increase the DoF any further. Was already using the max f32. I used the close-up lense with the built-in flash and for this shot underexposed by about 1.3 fstops to keep detail in the highlights. I do loose some detail with the add-on close-up though, which would not be the case with the use of exte. tubes. Kind regards.

A clasic bluebottle (as we know them ;-)) fly - this is one of the better shots I have seen of these, and you exposed the head well. Pity about being limited with DOF with SLR cameras - sometimes it helps to take it from slightly further away, then to crop the photo - effectively compromising resolution for DOF. I am also wondering if an extention tube would help with DOF by effectively decreasing the apperture. Nicely taken - the focus is where it should be...
