About
One of a couple of photos I captured this evening about 5 minutes from my home.
This is GWR King Class "King Edward I" powering it's way through Newbury on the main line at speed.
I just about remember steam on the mainline in the UK in it's dying years as the main form of locomotion, but seeing the loco like this rather than pottering up and down a small track really makes you appreciate the power and engineering that was associated with them.
But it does have to be said that from a visual point of view the pollution was fairly horrendous!
For sure Neil, seeing a steam loco in full flight like this is awesome. It has to be said though that 'professional' firemen didn't make as much black smoke. A lot of it was down to their art and some to the quality of the coal which was a lot better than nowadays. Magnificent capture, only wish I could have been alongside you for this one. Here's one for you then. Back in 62 I travelled to Aynho (just south of Banbury) to get a shot of King 6018 which was on a special. It was a dank miserable day, very misty. I got soaked. What was my means of transport? Only a mighty NSU Quickly 50cc moped - one step up from a pushbike. The things we did to get pics of steam locos. Many thanks for another fabulous dedi. Den
