About At first I thought a skylark, then a pipit of some sort (meadow / rock / tree?). Shot at about 1700 feet altitude in the Lake District, UK, near some rocky outcrops but also near to a wide expanse of moorland. It behaved much like a skylark (hovering then diving while singing), but doesn't have the 'tuft' normally associated.

Any help appreciated!

Hehe Den, I have the same book but just look at the pictures. I guess you know you've grown up when............

I think you are right - thank you VERY much for taking the time to investigate!!

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve. I've been referring to the RSPB book of Birds. The Meadow Pipit and Tree Pipit are on adjacent pages and studying them I think I come down in favour of the Meadow Pipit. It's descibed as having "soft blackish streaks on greyish, olive, or yellowish brown back". The deciding factor for me was "very long hind claw" whereas the Tree Pipit has short claws. Hope this is of some use.
Den
PS Needless to say it is a superb shot.

Hi Marcus, what a great comment, I think I deserved it! I'm laughing out loud as I type this. One of these days I'll stop nailing my birds to fence posts (pine or oak) and take some in flight... sadly, as yet, I don't have your talent!!
Cheers my friend,
Steve.

This is so good Steve, the soft muted background set this lovely bird off perfectly. Excellent capture and composition 7

This is a amazing shot steve, the detail is amazing, very nice pose and background blur, as for the ID I would have to say that is pine or oak :) Great shot....

Thank you James.

I'd just about decided this was a tree pipit when I saw your reply!! Hehe... I think I should have called this "Mona Lisa" - looks nice but a bit of a mystery!!

Have a good weekend!
Regards
Steve

Im no expert but looking on various sites I like your suggestion of Meadow Pipit the pictures seem to fit and your diving while singing seems to match "in the breeding season it has a fluttering 'parachute' display flight" found on one site.

Anyway, I think it's a cracking picture of whatever it is and as good as if not better than the ones on most of the sites dedicated to birds.
