About Taken at Death Valley... the white areas are salt deposits. These glistened a little too brightly in the sunshine. The horizon may seem tilted but it is due to the uneven landscape. What I mostly like is the landscape and of course the great reflection in the water.

PS Work: Cropping, adjusted brightness and contrasts.

Hugo, thanks.. yeah, I saw Tom's and thought.. hey thats my photo :) The tilt is more an illusion but it does seem to be tilted. Well, if you saw this scene with the water, you probably would not be able to drive the back roads since they would most likely be washed out.

Now here is a bad water photo that's hard to beat.... Bad water was almost dry when I was there last feb, and this shot reminds me of Tom Rumland's photo... Almost identical. A slightly larger tilt in the horizon than is actually there, I believe, but that's only minor... Very cool, what an awesome place!

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks for the comment... actually I have other shots that moved the horizon but for some reason this composition stood out for me...

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 6/6/2005
I was going to ask if you saw Tom's footprints at the spot you shot this, but I notice that he caught this already :-) It is a lovely shot, but I think the composition could be less static if you did not place the "horizon" so firmly in the middle.

paul, it sure is the same! great minds think alike, no? actually, i think it's pretty hard not to shoot this. the only difference i can see is that i shot mine from a bit lower than you. my tripod was setup so the camera was just above the rope rail.

btw, congrats on the BIP! i guess it validates mine ;^)

take care,
tom

Oh my, you've been Bipping all over the place since my last visit!! Congratulations Paul!! This is a beauty. The dark shadow in the foreground echoed in the sky, together with the rich color and reflection of the simple yet powerful shape of the mountain all conspire to make this a winner. Antonia

Not an easy shot, despite the gorgeous scenery. Your decision for wide angle perspective was surely right, and your choice of camera position and image composition is very good. Congrats for another BIP !

The low angle shot gave this valley endless vision which absolutely has the characteristic to be Death Valley, no sign of life. The reflection enhances the whole composition and it makes a very beautiful natural contrast with the clear sky, excellent subject and capture. Saeed

Mark, I did get to the dunes and managed a few good shots....but did not have much time since the sun was setting fast...also, there had been a lot of people there during the day so lots of footprints in the sand. Too bad about the indie film effort..

Very unusual landscape, for sure. I think the dark foreground and the darker sky at the top help to direct attention along the main area of the photograph. The reflection is beautiful, but it's an austere and rather daunting beauty. I guess the valley deserves its name...

I guess death valley is the death for photographers as they couldn't stop making pictures, get lost of their last water and then died of dryness ;-)

very good reflection composing and depth composing as well. splendid colors.

Really nice shot !! Love the colors and the wide angle choice. Did you get the dunes? I shot there years ago - a very interesting place (but I was working on an indie film that never got finished so - no still shots. That was the end of my Film making persuits - just burns up money faster than the speed of light) Great work, Mark
