Jim,

Thanks for the info. Your shots from the hip are very very good! And I do shoot quite a bit from tripod, espcially this time of year. I am 15 minutes from Lake Martin and it's pretty neat there during spring and summer. But I do quite shoot from a boat an awful lot (when the fish aren't biting!) so the 300 f4 sounds like what I should get also. Hope to hear from you soon and thanks again.

I will probably get the 300 F.4 with IS. THe 300MM 2.8 is 3800.00 compared to around 1200.00 I can get by nicely without the one stop for 2400.00 bucks. Also I have a friend with a 300MM 2.8 hardly ever uses it since he got a 400MM f.4
he 600MM you use is forever out of my league.
a 300 with my 1.4 II gives me 420MM x 1.6 , over 600MM equivalent just not the 2.8 it would be 5.6, my 20D gives me great results at ISO 400 so I think the 300MM f4 is the way to go for me, light and quick and frankly very few of my shots are tripod, but from the hip while the opportunity is there.

Jim,

I have the 100-400 and I have a hard time with it also. I have been looking at the 300 f2.8 and 300 f4, not sure about it yet but would like to know what you think. Thanks for the info.

Darelene, In answer to your question on the 70-200 , I love it, When I bought the 20d in Jan i had to get into a longer lens and tried the 100-400, I wasn't impressed, might have gotten a bad copy, So I brought it back and bought the 70-200 f 2.8 with the 1.4 II extender.
They stay mounted all the time. I am close to purchasing a 300 IS which I think is better than the 400MM F 4.0 without the IS. I got to get as much bang for the buck as I can but I won't by anything canon except L series.

Well done Jim. Our house finches have a red head but not red body. These guys are very pleasing to the eye. Do you like your 70-200 lens?

Jim,
Nice shot,
A couple of years ago, we had a nest of these in one of our hanging baskets on the front porch. Four or five eggs hatched. Unfortunately another bird or animal raided the nest before they could fly.

This is great too, but it made me smile too, those little twigs sticking up, I thought the bird was about to wing on the bar, it looks like he is a gymnast. What a perfect combination a beautiful image, and a smile
