About t The Straits of Gibraltar from 10,000m.

It's 30 minutes by fast ferry from Tarifa (on the spit of land sticking into the sea on the right in this image) to Tanger, then a couple of hours drive down to Rabat. But my client insisted that instead I drove to Malaga, caught a flight to Madrid, then another to Casablanca, then took a train to Rabat and then a taxi to the hotel. So 8 hours after leaving, I got to fly over my home.

The peninsular in the foreground is Ceuta, a Spanish enclave and major port. Beyond Ceuta is Jebel Musa and the new Moroccan port of Oued Rmel.

The colours have been adjusted to remove the UV effects and the image has been cropped to remove the worst of the sticky fingermarks and nose prints that were on the window of the plane

Hugo - many thanks for your kind comments on this image. I was able to clean the window up on the inside but couldn't do much about outside! I haven't tried to clean the photo up at all yet, apart from cropping off the worst of the smudges at the top and adjusting (quite heavily) the colour balance to reinstate the natural colours. I'll have a go later when I've got time... I find this sort of imaging rather challenging as the compositional options tend to be somewhat limited.

Hi AJ, I know this trip, but only by sea. A very nice little refreshing hop over the Gibraltar Straight. Never saw it from above, though, and in all fairness, I wouldn't have recognised it if you hadn't told you. (I just take your word for it...:)

The almost square crop and the frame gives it a "medium format" quality, and the tones are excellent. A very well balanced photo, in all aspects. When I look closely, I notice there are still some smudges, but IMO, they only have a minor effect on the image. Very nice aerial!

Cheers,

Hugo

Very interesting post -- I have enjoyed the geography info and story. It is nice to see others who are compelled to take pics out the window of the plane. The fingermarks and nose prints do get in the way, don't they? It just occurred to me that those could have a special place in another photo study (though not for this one -- just another fun idea to explore). Now I hope you will post some other pics of your excursion. The series title? "8 Hours" Antonia
