Great first attempt :)
Perhaps you should have a look through some food magazines, Donna Hay being my favourite for photography style. I'm not a fan of f-stops that are too high also.
I don't give away advice without being wary, but you are my friend! Donna Hay is pure gold - have a look, you will not regret it.

Brilliant colour-salad but definitely needs F11 and a tripod, or take a separate shot focussing on the strawberries and merge them in PS. If you've got any shot with the strawberries in focus from a similar angle you could fix it easily. (If you email them both to me I'd be happy to show you how).
Best wishes and happy eating! ... Jonathan

ok ok, but what about the 'great effort for your first attempt'? hehehee
You know I think I'm like one of those skiers I laugh at...has all the great gear and looks the part, but when its time to actually ski they have no idea!

Again, i agree with the previous comments. Everything is focused but the strawberries... And there is a shadow on the mangoes in the back...

Is fruit all you got ;)
Really IMO you should have stopped it down to f8/f16 so its in focus right across the plate, do you have a hand held light meter? if so you should be able to get a reading to go along with the fstop your after all in all a good shot everything is were it should be
