Hi Dan, absolutely a great shot, and good to see you on the main page again. The shallow DOF is an excellent choice, and the image quality is superb. The attentive dog adds the finishing touch and a lot of suspence. Impressive shot.

Cheers,

Hugo

Wonderful image, the dof is great and I like how even though the beagle is out of focus you can see the personality and intensity in the look. Alison

Congrats on the SC award, Dan. Very deserving for such a well executed shot. I am really happy with low noise shots from my 20D at 1600 ISO. Haven't tried it at 3200 yet.

Excellent capture Dan, the reviews say the 18-55mm kit lens is a cracker and it certainly shows with this. It didn't take you long to get to grips with the 20D :-)

An excellent photograph and congratulations on the SC !

Best wishes,
Steve

Great DOF work...

just made up a photocell activated trigger to try some "splash" images.
Going test it out and see if I can capture falling objects without having to trip the shutter by trial and error. (Banner photoeye and solid state relay, dry contact plugged into remote port on 10D)

Congrats on SC what a super picture. even though the dog is 'in the background' you can almost sense that tension of being told 'to stay' and just wanting to get the ball

Geza I do not believe it also. I Used the lens that came with the camera a 18-55mm lens I had it zoomed to 55mm and I was only 7 inches from the ball.I had a 18-55mm lens with my canon digital rebel and it only focused to about 16 inches.I sold that one on ebay for 139.00 and bought a 28-70mm on ebay it is my favorite lens , very sharp.

Excellent, the DOF control is great. How far was the ball from camera? You have macro in EOS 20D. Is that regular or macro objectiv?

Great shoot, Dan. Really lovely picture... Congratulation with SC. Can't belive ISO 800 could be so clear, I never use it in my camera, after trying one time (it was terrible noises).
Warm regards,
Lena

Absolutely hilarious. This is one of the neates and sharpest close shot Ive ever seen! I mean, you can see EVERY fiber of that ball!!
Love the way hes kinda "lurking" in the background. Im a little suprised the dog didnt pounce on the ball while you were trying to take this...(my dog NEVER would sit still, come to think of it, neither do my kids) :)

Yes, I have to agree about the standards. Thought it was just me until I read up on lens reviews and saw all the complaints on the stock lens... I guess they're all hit and miss. Who knows if one got dropped by accident and put back on the shelf? :) Still - this is an excellent shot and the DOF is incredible with the dog so clear (yet not) in the background looking fondly at the love of it's life... LOVE THIS (I had a Beagle once).

Dan Lightner   {K:12684} 3/8/2005
I think that some standard factory lenes are better that others,I dont think that they have tight tolerances on them ,I think I got a good one. I solld my 18-55mm that came with my Digital rebal on ebay I didnt like it. I dont remember it focusing as close as this one does, This one focuses to about 7 inches . Thats closer than any other lens I have.

Dan - this is wonderful. How you did it with the 18-55 is beyond me and that alone deserves an award. Congrats on staff choice.

Randy Lorance Randy Lorance   {K:24769} 3/8/2005
Congratulations on SC Dan! This was very effective to shoot with the DOF making the ball the central subject, and we see the focus of the pup is on the ball also. A small detail like the ball not being prestine but in used condition adds a lot to the shot.
