About My wife grows 'em, I just shoot 'em. This is our first amaryllis to bloom this year. Taken with the little Sony U20 camera. My wife was walking by with a dark garment while I was shooting this and I had her hold it up as a background.

(Actual f/stop 3.2 from EXIF)

This is the shot that won the Best Color Photograph award in the Syracuse University "On My Own Time" art show. See http://www.usefilm.com/image/780528.html

Thank you to all who offered congratualtions and thanks to the Usefilm community for the inspiration.

Also, being an ex Sony employee, I'm glad you've found out that 2M pixels can do wonders, even with large prints. Congratulations!

Hi Jim...returned the favor and took a "stroll" through your portfolio. Found this beauty, I can see why you won an award...it is gorgeous! I too have a little Sony that sometimes produces images that equal or exceed my Canon...go figure! I'm sure you'll miss your trusty friend.
Thanks for the kind words!
Take care...Robin

It's very pretty. Smart thinking re capturing it against your wife's garment. It came out beautifully -- the color is rich and vibrant. Also, your DOF is spot on so that the fabric isn't detectible (which happens and could have been distracting). Great crop -- beautiful little pinwheel. Congrats again! Antonia

Jim, this is such a nice shot of amaryllis. They are hard for me to photograph properly because I just can't seem to get the DOF correctly. This simple straight-forward composition suits the flower very well. Good catch to see it when your wife was walking by! Tell her she grows her flowers very well. Amy

I also grow Amaryllis bulbs for fun. (I have posted several here in Usefilm) I started about 15 yr.s ago with a single bulb. I now have about a dozen and have given many as gifts. I like the color and the black background makes a nice contrast. Del.
