Generally Larry, I use my eye to judge my settings. Then I check my first couple for surety. I often use Auto Focus on the 'M' setting for quick shots (lack of time). But I usually always select my own Shutter and Aperture.
I hope that helps.

Incredible detail, just 12 inches Judi. Every little crook and corner show. You are doing most of your work manually for aperature and shutter? Don't you use auto for anything anymore? How about focusing?
Do you measure exposure in any way? Or do you have a set basic aperature/shutter, then go one way or the other by what you want to shoot?
I envy your detail my friend....:-))
