About Subject background: A small interrruption from my NYC series with fresh stuff from today. The "famous" Colosseum in a winter-setup. The drama of this former Nazi monument may be seen in the clouds.

PS concept: The title says "Best of both worlds". This refers to the double picture technique used here. One normal color shot, and one Infrared version (R72). I used the details of the IR as a background layer and the colors of the color version as an additional layer. Both are blended with the "color" option. Color version is blurred with Gaussian filter. Additional PS tweaking needed =)

As always: Honest feedback highly appreciated.

This is super - it has a slightly unreal feel to it - which is why I like it so much - especially as it's so subtle I don't know why it has an unreal feel!
The sky is really wonderful and there is plenty of interest in the foreground too.
I have ordered an IR filter off eBay - can you give me any tips to get me started? Things like what subjects make good subject, and what setting you have your camera on and how to process them in PS - any tips will be appreciated!

Hi Theo,
I've just made this one a favorite, it's simply awesome! The 'tweaking' you did here is excellent, but of course it all begins with a superb image!!

EXCELLENT,
Lori :)

Hallo!

Hi Thilo
Coming from Canada, I know what you mean about the cold. It was -25c here last weekend. That can really deter you from fiddling with different settings outdoors.

hey bro,

as a tripod is definitely needed, I'm not so sure how often I will do this. the technique rocks IMHO, not it's up the subjects!

Hi Andre,

I spent most of the work getting there with cam and tripod (it was really cold, btw) =)

hi verena,

One of the best things about this site is when the people here go to great lengths to explain how they got there results. This is a beautiful photograph and I appreciate it all the more when I read how much work has gone into it.
Great job Thilo.

bei dem Titel habe ich erstmal an die alte und neue Welt gedacht habe...was wohl bei Deinem aktuellen Reiseplan beabsichtigt war, nicht wahr ;)

Hi Antonio,

yes, this is a special IR filter. I use the Hoya R72 as it's relatively cheap and it achieves great IR results.

Thilo

Antonio Trincone   {K:23167} 1/23/2005
and indeed you get an excellent result Thilo. May I ask you some more detail on R72? is it a filter ?

I have to say it is not immediately obvious that PS work has been undertaken here. This does you credit and the resulting composition is excellent.

I have not the knowledge of PS that you have. The only thing that I can say is that I like the very dramatic effect of the entire scene. It seems also a little bit surrealistic. Cecilia
