Yes, Olga, the practice of putting small shrines up is common worldwide. The difference, as you rightly observe, lies in the detail. Rather like miniature societies in their own right!

where I come from we also build small churches, but not as elaborately as this one, it is beautiful, exotic and poetic in its own way.

Thanks for your comments, Fadel. I take your point about the cable. Maybe I'll get another bite of the cherry some time later in 2005, but the odd thing about spirit houses is they're never quite the same from one day to the next!

One minor thing is the cable on the top right corner, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a wonderful image!
