About This was the studio that was added on to our home. My main business was weddings and portraits, studio and location. Also shot a lot of feminine boudoir photography, which is the reason for feathers and jewelry, etc.

When I came accross these photos today, I really did a lot of 'going back in time'....sometimes I wish I had held on to certain pieces of equipment! At the time I didn't think I would really be wanting them.

And yes, I did keep my parrot in the studio, he really used to help entertain people.

Although some would be alarmed when he said "Your my sweetie pie" when a woman was changing clothes. Or "your my baby"...all said just as clear as a bell!

Anyway, just thought I'd share a bit of my past with all of you!

And it really WAS a 'decisive moment' to go out of business, actually, I had thought about it for almost a year.

Lori :)

Hi JIm,
I am at times at loose ends. But my husband recently retired, so we want to have free time.
Also, I really think that 'it was just time'...no longer was doing weddings, got burned out on them, so my studio business slowed down a lot. I used to pull a LOT of studio business from my exposure to wedding. I just decided that I couldn't justify using this huge room for a studio for slower business. It took me almost a year to really DO IT! I thought about it for the longest time. My husband asked me many times if that's what I REALLY wanted to do. My practical side took over.

I've had regrets occasionally, but I do love our very large family room now, and I'm still passionate about photography, which now is entirely for my pleasure!

If you so enjoy teaching, why not do some type of volunteer teaching somewhere?

Thanks for asking,
Lori :)

ps...please feel free to Email me anytime!

I'm curious as to why you decided to close up shop. I am recently retired (not by choice) from doing something I love (teaching) and find myself at loose ends. I am interested in finding out how others react.

Hi Rawabi,
Yes, I know what you mean. But you do get over that (most of the time) because your overhead and expenses are so high!

Thanks, glad you liked this one,
Lori :)

Hi Antonella,

Thank you so much for all your nice comments.

I think when a person is beginning to experience 'burn out' in any profession, it's time for a change.
I'm fortunate that I was able to do that.

Now photography is purely for my enjoyment!!!
Lori :) :)

After 300 weddings One must wonder about the continium... How many are still bound to their vows... I have attended 11 this year... and only used the dispible ones left on the table for the couple...

With the evolution of technology... the growth of simple number of photographers... one wonders about the opportunity for that photographer who will really stand out from the crowd...

Where does one go... one looks back to the happy moments, the disasters of which there was one or two... remember when the bride fell into the lake from the canoe... I do!

Compliments, and may their be happiness in the years to come with PS!

Thanks for posting this. I've just had a trawl through your portfolio. There's a lot of good stuff in there. I can't help when looking at a picture like this thinking, 'I could use that, I could use that'. I'd love to be in a position one day to have a proper studio myself (I'm a fair way off at the moment! Right at the beginning of the path so to speak.) but as others have said, to do something for fun is very different to doing it for work. Nice studio and nice work. Ah, you've sent me all pensive now! :)

Very interesting to see all this. I make portraits whenever light is available from the outside. I have neither equipment nor place to put it up and I just wished I could have access to it once to make some stunning portrait. Thanks for sharing and it looks great.

Hi Richard,
Thanks for your comment. I DO feel free now, I wouldn't want to be back in business again, I really am enjoying just photographing for my own pleasure once again. I love the experiences I had while in business and would't trade that for anything.

Photography, once in the blood, seems to never leave! I will always have a camera attached to my hand.

Once many years ago, I took my four children camping and decided to not take the camera since it's ALWAYS in front of my face. BIG MISTAKE. I was so miserable, saw so many great photo ops...in short, I'm never without my camera. And it's important to me not to just 'point and shoot'

This is probably more than you wanted to know!
Lori :)

Hi Maria,

Thank you so much for sharing a part of yourself with me, I really appreciate that a lot. I love hearing what others have to say regarding 'life' and their feelings. That's what makes these friendships special!

And yes, I could indeed make 'heads or tails' out of what you had to say!!
Have a GR8 day/evening!
Lori :)

Hi Lori...

Thanks for sharing these beautiful memories...

You gave up earning money, buy I do not think you gave away your passion for photography... It is shown on your pictures every time you upload one... It is not the same doing something for a living than for fun... I for example, love my computers also, but I live from them and sometimes I want to throw it all away, and something else...

In photography I had found again that passion that I had in the beginning with the computers... that desire to learn, to be good... to make a difference... but I also know that the other passion in my life are computers... I come home everyday... a get hooked on the internet... viewing my friends pictures... So, I have not lost it... And that is why you did not lost it when you gave up working as a photographer...

Well Lori... I do not know if you can make heads and tails of this... You just made me begin to wonder... a lot of things... :0)

Again thanks for sharing, and you did really a great job with this collage...

A big kiss,

Maria

Hi Mark,

I used White Lightning, excellent sources. I had three of them; main, fill and background. Each unit has a built in slave, they are really great lights. For the background one I also had a honeycomb grid attachment that also held color gels, lots of fun. Even turning around the background light to backlight the models hair and shoulders with color (or without) produces great pictures also. I LOVED changing the lighting for each person, never used just the 'standard' on all people. (that would be like 'mug shots')

Also, each unit has excellent modeling lights, you could see the exact ratio you set, in the modeling lights. Loved them!!
Lori :)

Dear Lori, Very nice idea. My studio's not quite as neat - more bohemian / loft looking. It still functions but am doing some slight remodeling (I think I started before Clinton became Prez. ) It's moving along nicely. We'll see who wins -me or le termites. Take Care, Mark PS. (what kind of lights were you using - the brand?)

Thanks Stephen,
African grays are wonderful parrots, worth the work. If we had more room we would probably have one, but we have 3 birds, and that's enough.

I have entertained thoughts of breeding, that's such a big commitment though. :)

Have a gr8 day Stephen! :)
