Hi John......I don't know much about taking pictures and even less about taking pictures of people but what I see here and like is the shadow areas on the left side of the face and then coming out to a brighter on the front, still retaining shadows in the deeper portion of the face.
I like.

Very beautiful image, John. Your son is a cute little chap and his expression here is priceless. Love those sad eye, they fit perfectly in the mood often caused by a dark rainy day.
