Sorry for the delay on relying but I have been working too hard. Thanks for the clarification. You know, I've had this image in my portfolio now for half a year? And in re reading your comment and looking at your work it suddenly dawned on me why this plant was where it was. It was at the Los Angeles zoo- outside the Koala enclosure!
You do great work, I spent a good bit a time browsing your images. Thanks again. JOhn B

John, it is either Grevillea Long John, Grevillea longistyla or Grevillea johnsonii. G. Long John is a hybrid between G. johnsonii and G. longistyla. Bruce

I'm afraid I can't help you either . . . I have difficulty identifying the flowers in my back yard, let alone these beautiful, exotic species!
I really like the background in this shot. The wavy lines create a sense of motion that part of this flower (the leaves) is getting sucked into, in contrast with the subject, which is perfectly still. I love the sharpness of the flower - how in the world did you achieve that with such a shallow DOF?
It feels like this flower is really "opening up" to the camera . . . . I wonder what this shot would have looked like with an overhead angle? Regardless, this is a compelling floral.

Not got touch sensitive leaves has it? It has some mimosa qualities to its arrangment but the leaves bit too needle like perhaps.. You pulled a super elegant colour out of the background here that sets this off really well John.

Hi John, nice DOF, and some beautiful tones. I think the cool, blueish grey background works fabulous in bringing the unknown flower to life. Not my theme, but a very good and even somewhat dynamic shot.
Cheers,
Hugo
