Hi Menno, thanks for reminding me that I still needed to reply to your question... I used a + EV Flash comp because i wanted a slight overexposure in the legs of the spider to create a more creepy effect. Eventhough the ambient light was strong enough to go without flash all together at 1600 ASA, I wanted a boost of light from below, as well as rendering the background all black. The flash setting wasn't a deliberate choice, I still need to learn more about flash photography; most images where I used a flash, the settings are chosen by trial and error (see also http://www.usefilm.com/image/590125.html)
In general, I use a flash as little as possible, but for weddings and these kinds of experiments, I cannot live without it. I use the SB28 for my F100, and the SB800 for the D100.

Wow Hugo, this is really cool! The white light on the legs is so bright that normally I would maybe feel that they are a bit over exposed. But since the body look so kind of neon glowing, and so does the web... and that gives a cool and original "dicso-touch" to the whole capture. It's great I think!

Hi Hermen, when I looked back at the EXIF photo,the 1600 ASA struck me as odd too.... But thinking back at the situation, the spider was in a dark alcove,. I used the flas deliberately, as I needed some light under the spider to make it come out better. A smaller aperture (value, at least that's what I think you mean, otherwise the shutter time would only be longer) would've reduced the DOF, which I needed to get the spider in focus as much as possible. Also, the flash sync speed of the D100 is not very fast.
If I were to take this shot again, I think I would use the same set up, but with a slower shutterspeed, a lower sensitivity and probably even with a smaller apperture, to increase the DOF.

Hugo, I like this one best in your spider series. You achieved good focus on the spider and also good contrast (thanks to the flash?).
I was a bit puzzled about your exposure settings, 1600ISO & f/8 and 1/90s ... I would think this combination would be good for very low (ambient) light, but you used a flash! Wouldn't a smaller aperture and a shorter shutter time (at least if your flash sync speed allows it) be better in this case?

Have you used some light from under the web ??
very spiky (like my spider photo too) and the spiders coulor makes the photo more creepy.

Ahhh something new for you! I can just see you photographing these things! :) But must be more exciting than flowers huh? :)
You've done a nice job of lighting on this one, I like how the whole image turned out.
I rather like the focus here, my only wish would be that he be facing the other way. But I do know that these things can stay in their positions for a long time. (then later when you come out again, he's gone!) So have to get him while you can.
The web is absolutely fantastic! Again, thanks to the lighting. Super colors also, very nice work.
Not sure I like the composition, I prefer to give him 'room to crawl'....which is why I like the composition more on your first one. I also love the background on the first one as well.
Not to say I don't like this background, I think it's great for this image.

Where to start after an absince? Richt here, I suppose. I like the color of this 8 legged fellow and the impression of a tough, springy net, some of which is in focus. The flash isolated him against a dark background.

It?s not that you must like the subject to create a piece of art from it, and you don?t have to explain to every one that you dislike spider!At least that's what i think. It?s about the idea even if it has been told by the others! This is your pic, your idea, your seeing, your story?and that?s what makes one different than the other.
Anyway, nice captures from different angels. I think the dark behind has made the spider more beautiful and sparkle. By the way photographing digitally might makes it easer but it say nothing if men has no talent!

Well Hugo...3rd and best. This takes you out of our world and into theirs. If only we could see ourself through their multiple eyes. The backlighting (or sidelighting) and perspective give spider and web a weightlessness and trap ready to spring feel.
I think that the main appeal to me is orienting it horizontally, setting it apart from other pictures of similar spiders and webs. But your lighting tecnique is what made it work. I've tried turning a similar comp, but it felt heavy and awkward.
This would be a 'magic light' project as well.

Excellent and very well composed shot. The zoom is incredible. The lighter parts of the spider are very light, but when you look at the background such lighting must have been needed. So a good choise.
Great work Hugo, are you bussy lately? You aint around as much as you used to do. Hope my little 'blast out' from lately hasn't anything to do with it, it wasn't my intention.

Hugo, the light on the web (net) is what makes this shot for me. We can see the spider in her home, waiting for some unlucky fly or mosquito to happen along. I suppose if we didn't have spiders, we would be overrun with bugs. Best wishes, Kurt

The glowing/translucent feet scare me a lot. how did you achieve that? by the flash?

This spider had clearly picked a perfect spot waiting for your capture, the spider and its web was defined perfectly by the indirect flash, simple illumination gave the image and the atmosphere, natural lighting as the dark background helped a lot, looking to the other 2 definitely the best, Saeed

hugo, this is my favorite of the spider series. the angle you chose is so unusual that it is captivating. seeing the spider from our horizontally dominated perspective is very interesting. it looks as if ready to pounce on some unseen prey. tension in hugo-speak ;^) great job with the fill-flash. it gives the critter a nice glow, demanding attention, as well as bringing out it's web. i dig this one a lot!

Incredible, it looks like you managed to get a little lightbulb into that creature! The light and DOF are impressive, very nice angle to take this picture and the crop and dark background are just fine. The only thing I can think of to make it better is to take the spider from the other side, so frontal not from the back. Kind regards, Ted

The composition of this is so different to the others I have seen (including my own). I do like the way this is captured on the same plane as the web. The way the slave flash has illuminated the web is super.
