About Subject Background: Night at Venice. I tried to capture the loneliness in the streets of Venice, the natural light, the small streets... This sign works as a frame. You might think about the hinted person and the shadows that has been cropped away. Two remarks: first, I used the 50mm fixed lens which imposes some restrictions. I wanted to go with the horizontal format to get as close to the sign/frame as possible. Second, I didnt like the strong shadow that was casted by the multiple light sources. So I went just for a hinted "blob" shadow. If I waited longer for the person walking in the back, this would be too dominant for me. The person should be a natural part of the street, not a dominant part.

Photoshop concept: Tried to correct the strange geometry of these old houses but then rejected the idea as the geometry actually IS that way ;-) Slight crop. Slight reduction of the strong light sources. no additional work, straight from the camera. Grain comes from the fast 800 film.

As always: Honest feedback highly appreciated.

Dear Gayle,

Venice is kind of interesting at night. you will find a lot of lights near the water but not in the streets ;-)

kind of creepy.

WOW! i like what the 800 speed film did..great grain,DOF,sharp focused framing sign..and how you framed this shot..i would have thought the alley would have been dimly lit?..most of ours in the city are too dark!...regards,gayle

Dear Arwa,

I'm glad you like the narrow feeling I tried to create with this shot.

thanks again for your feedback,

Dear Patrick,

nice to hear controversal feedback =)

actually, I do "crop" the shadow with the camera not with Photoshop. With a longer shadow the composing would be very much different. So probably both version make sense in some way =)

thx for your critics,

Thilo

Dear Hugo,

first of all: thanks for the creative rework ,-)

While I do like the off-centering of the sign, I think the more centered person is something I wouldn't go for... hard decision: replace sign centering against person centering ;-)

thx for the precious feedback my friend,
Thilo

the sign effectively frame and confine the blurry man
which gives the same sensation felt when walking in the narrow small streets of Venice
wonderful image!! 7+++++++++++++

Wish you had cropped it abit less.. so we could see more of his feets and the ground there.. Then it would have been perfect in my eyes! I still like it alot though. great blur, composition, colors and light.. =)

Cheers

Hi Thilo, Interesting to read your considerations. Especially the statement that the sign works as a frame. That was not what I had in mind...;o)

I think the sign is the primary subject in this shot. The shallow DOF, creating only a vague image of the scene behind it adds the tension here.

As to the second remark, that one is more difficult to assess, as the considerations strongly rely on your options, for which one needs to be there, as they don't show in this shot.

I agree with the decision of minimising the strong shadow, though. Also, mainly because of the shallow DOF, the person does become a natural part of the scene. The tension I mentioned becomes a part of the atmosphere.

The atmosphere provides a bit of an uneasy feeling, something lurking in the dark, ready to pounce. Maybe that atmosphere could be emphasised even more by breaking the alignment you created with the even frame left, right and on top. In the attachment, you'll see what I mean. Maybe The crop could be even more extreme. I tried to emphasise the atmosphere by removing the symmetry in the natural frame created by the walls and the sign.

In the second version, the person becomes more dominant, resulting in an entirely different shot / mood, so I can only conclude you made the right choice here. It has less tension, IMO. Also the primary subject has changed from the sign to the man.

Cheers,

Hugo

I prefer the picture you posted first with background out of focus!
"Calle del clero" means, you know, "Clergy lane" and then, in your first shot, it appears as a close space...
Congrats again

Hi Thilo,

Verena

this is very nice for composition governed by the DOF and light I appreciated it very much; if you were lucky enough to find a clerk walking around it would fit very well with the name right in focus in the upper part of the shot: "Road of the priest" :)

I upload an alternative which I didn't find as interesting as the posted one. Here the focus is on the person/street so that the sign is out of focus.

Would be glad to know which one you'll find more interesting =)
