About back to color! the b&w thing was getting a bit monotonous ;^) this was shot the same day as "storm coming". it's late afternoon and you can see the beginnings of the storm that almost caught us out.

i'm much happier with the sharpness on this one. this is about as far as i dared use the USM and still avoid having unnatural edges. what bugs me here is apparent noise in the sky. well, the whole frame really, but it's most noticeable in the sky. i'm using a new monitor, however, which has a much larger dot pitch than my old one and i can't tell if it's noise or dot separation. how does it look to you?

actual data was 1/10 @ f/22, 24mm focal length. as usual, commentaries and critiques are most welcome and appreciated.

Tom: Was parusing the portfolio and noticed a trend between this one and extremes.

Next time you head out try shooting one extra shot low to the ground. If you bring a tripod put that thing as close to the ground as it will go and crank the F-stop as far as it will go. Use the hyperfocal distance to get a crisp image.

If you can find them, some interesting little rocks and bits might provide a nice foreground interaction to the overall beauty of the desert.

Maybe Tom Lamb will have some other bright ideas. His work is pretty tight ans seems to have the same style.

hugo, thank you! glad you dig it. and thanks for the noise reduction tips. i'll have to give it a shot. it's been driving me nuts lately so i've acquired some plugins from FM software that should help. i'll try both side-by-side and see which one works best.

btw, you can't see the tracks here because it is a different shot ;^) i was just about to crop the other one when i remembered i had this one. taken at about the same time but more to left. unfortunately, it doesn't show the tracks. but, like i told michael above, i have a pretty good idea of what to do next time i'm out there.

thanks again,
tom

take care,
tom

gorgeous colors Tom! love the composition.

there IS some noise there, only really noticable for me in the sky...but not really much of a distraction in my eyes.

anyways, love the shot, and big congrats on the BIP-much deserved.
take care Tom...

Hi Tom, Excellent crop, and the contrast and saturation are right down my alley.

About the sharpening (nothing wron with that, Mary Sue told me about a very useful PS sharpening trick that will not result in halos:

Go to Lab colour. (use the channels tab)
Click on the Lightness channel
Then apply the Unsharpen wmask just to this b&w lightness channel (avoiding the colour halos)
Switch back to RGB.... Done!

It's more elaborately described in Kelby's Photoshop book for digital photographers.

As to the noise, It's there, allright, but I don't think its distracting nor disturbing the quality of this shot. If it bothers you, maybe it's time to have a go at Neat Image. Or read Kelby, pages 74-76, also involving Lab colour... :)

Well, that's about it. I can't find anything else to nitpick about. (well, maybe one small thing... Can't see the tiretracks any more....;o) I like this one alot.

Cheers,

Hugo

Don't worry about the noise, the color drama is much more important. I think that the sucess of this photograph is:

The saturation of color - pretty intense and dramatic.

Excellent rule of thirds.

Shot during late, giving you a nice high contrast and warm light. Nothing better than storm clouds to add to the drama either.

My only improvement suggestion is to maybe quick mask with a ramp on the ground plane and give it a little bit o' contrast to make it seem to recede a bit. Or not...
