Great shot, well deserved award. You made them all fit in the frame without cutting one in a half. Well done.

Others can complain all they want... I'd put that up on my wall any day. Well done with relatively little light, and against the light, no less, which is harder to expose right. Nice warm glow all around. I had to look closely to find all the PS work, which I assume would be more obvious in a larger photo, but the dark/greenish spot on the right/top corner is distracting.

No, I did not use flash, that is why the geese are silhoutted against the orange background, with almost no visible detail (that would be a white spot on their heads just above the neck). The mist is white on the shadow side of the geese where the sun is not shining on it. It is like steam rising from the water.
There is also a distortion of the perpective (compression) from the lens at full 300 mm. That is why it looks like the mist was painted on a 2-dimensional surface.

Wow. I assumed after reading Jim Loy and looking carefully, that some of the fog/mist was added. It is really incredible that you captured the fog/mist and it has so many different tones of color (did you use a flash? why is it so 'white' against the swans?)

It is really an excellent composition.

As for appropriate use of PS, i agree that color, contrast, and cropping are all standard processing. One of the difficult things about critiquing on Usefilm is that you don't know whether to critique any one aspect, or even if it is a correct assumption made. I'm sorry for mistaking the fog on the swans as an effect!

Mark Susa   {K:2301} 10/18/2004
The PS work involved the "standard" processing of images as recommended by various authors writing articles in photography magazines namely; adjustment of brightness and contrast, increase in color saturation to about 20 (this number is my own preference), and reasonable USM. The was a bright spot in the right upper corner where the sun was reflected by the water, and this I patched up and evened up the brightness in that area. The mist comes from the lake, any lake, on cool summer mornings before sunrise. I stopped every morning on my way to work at two lakes in our metro park and took pictures last summer. I was taking pictures of two sycamore trees against the rising sun when the geese decided to get into the sunshine and in my into my background, the lake with the golden mist. Then I decided to take pictures of the geese, and as I got closer to them then started to swim away slowly into the misty shadows.
Try it sometime in mid-June, wait for the sun to clear the trees, and shine on the mist, and you will see an ethereal golden light. It is better than Photoshop... I know, because I dont know how to add mist effects in Photoshop or any other software.
Thank you so much for your comments, I am glad that you can express your honest opinion of my work just as Jim Loy did, and I do appreciate yours and his both. The reason I joined Usefilm is to have another photographer's critique of my work. The picture above I was not so sure about and I decided it to be my first upload.

It reminds me of a painting, a mixture of modern art and classical composition. really magnificent, congrats on the well-deserved SC.

in reply to the Jim Loy critique, I don't know if I would have erased the one reminder of life other than ducks in the orange-hued watery abyss. I like the modern-art effect of texture and color manipulation.

I do not know if you have added the fog effect, it looks a bit like PS brushwork, and maybe could have been better applied, but the effect overall is wonderful.

Thank you all for your kind comments and the warm welcome to Usefilm. I have already spent a lot of time navigating through the site and admiring all those beautiful images. I have no experience in doing photocritiques or rating photos but I imagine I will start soon. Meantime, I will learn by reading your commentaries on the works of other photographers.
Thanks again.

You gotta be kiddin'?? Staff choice? Top heavy... PS'd to all get out! And what is that bit of muck NOT cropped out in the left center? Staff choice? WHY??? Bright colours? Do you (the staff) get al worked up because of the yellow/orange? Sorry... but when it comes down to it, this is neither staff nor above average quality. It is cute, it is colorful... but not award worthy...
