Hi Neil,

Dear Gayle,
no, it wasn't too easy to get this shot WITHOUT the people here. I'm not sure if they are really necessary but I included them to get some hints of "humanity" in here and get away from pure & massive architecture.

hi,Thilo ~ Ditto what Hugo wrote ;D ..LOL..no noise this time on my monitor ..not sure i care for the people being present only because you can barely see them/or parts of them..probably difficult to get this shot without people around though...love the hint of blue...like the geodesic look of the top..fine job!..regards,gayle

Perfect... a masterpiece. A fabulous tibute to the architecture of the last WRIGHT period. The BW accentuates the spiral with some exciting tones. The great roof projects a light which exalts everything more. His circular form exalts the verticality of the perspective escape more. Regards. Efisio

Dear Erik,
it makes me happy that you mentioned the glimpes of human form. In fact, my favourite is the fist on the left. =)
Take care and thanks for the critics, Thilo

Dear Hugo,
I really appreciate critics where people take the ball and throw it into a different direction. You mentioned the DOF. You are - completely right. I would love to go there and make new shots. And I definitely will, with the D70. My Pentax has a horrible strong depth of focus. great for some moments, but nothing for portraits or difficult lighting conditions. I don't know if you ever tried a compact camera. But they sure have some technical problems ;-)
So I swear: I wil go back to Guggenheim, with a DSLR and a lens with great light values. ;-)
Take care and thanks for the encouragement, Thilo

Hi Thilo, time to return the favour....) The Guggenheim looks like a fascinating place. Each photo I've seen of that museum on usefilm, (including your other featured one) has a very majestic, yet abstract and corporate feel about it. This one is no excepption. The building lends itself perfectly for using different angles, and composing with lines, light, geometries and people.
That's also what I like in this image. There are the lines in the various levels and balconies, but also of the sharp edge, slightly curved to the left, but composed of straight lines, in very good harmony with the patterns in the roof.
The off-centered composition works very well. I always tend to appreciate most off centered compositions better than more static, centered images.
Then there is the contrast between the rigid structures and geometry of the building and it's users, breaking the perfect harmony of lines, only to liven it up. People unaware of the influence they exert on their environment.
Then there is the near desaturation of the tones, with only a faint hint of blue remaining. I think that's a very subtle tuning.
This angle and wide DOF removes the feeling of the actual height of the building, tough. With the curved lines it's already difficult to assess the height of each individual floor, but as there's nothing to suggest or hints at the actual hight above the balconies. Not sure how to achieve that, though. I'd keep the DOF the way it is... The only thing I can think of is to select another angle where you can also see the walls supporting the roof. That would result in a completely different shot, though.
I think that is the only thing that could be argued. Pretty lame, to be honest, but that's what you get with such a beauty....)
Excellent work, Thilo!
Cheers,
Hugo

Thilo,
Another beauty! I love the way the geometry doesn't quite line up perfectly. I also appreciate the teasing glimpses of human form. Nice work. Erik
