My first thought was, "Wow. An animal." :) It's great the bird was so still that you could use such a long exposure. To answer your question, they're both strong. It depends if you want to emphasise the water (this shot) or the bird (the other shot). I was initially drawn to this shot, but after examining the other one, it's a toss-up.

Hello Patrick, great series. I would have to go w/ the vertical crop. The motion of the rushing water emphasizes the stillness and calmness of the bird, creating a nice game in contrasts. The stick kind of throws off the singularness of the rock/bird, but unfortunatly not all things are with in our control, Great job,

Beautiful image! I don't know which crop is better; both are well balanced. The key factor is the contrast between the bird standing still and the flowing water, the choice between horizontal and vertical frame is less important.
