Fantastic expoure and composition. Great tones. I think the soft blue tones makes the lit windows a wonderful hightlight, both the windows themselves and the reflection. The off center subject was framed to pefection. Great!

Ian, from the exf info, the shutter speed was 1/500 @ F8. The ISO was 200 and I used center weighted metering with -2/3 exposure comp so not to blow out the highlights. I'm not too sure of the second part of your question.
With TTL metering exposure is not dependant on film/sensor size. What does change is the depth of field. With smaller sensors the DOF is effectivly greater than with the same object reproduced at the same size on a larger sensor/film. i.e 35 mm 6 x 6 cm etc. Cheers John

Fabulous shot John. The boat is a gorgeous subject and I'm pleased you found the lights on!
Utilized that absurd benefit of the ccd conversion ratio very well.
I'm intersted to know what shutter speed you used at 2.8 all that way away.
Can I ask a tip? I'm pondering the digital slr thing, it occurs to me sometimes the f. stop is effectively increased as well, is that right? since two thirds of the light hits the target, would the speed have been 1.5 times faster if you'd used film of the equivalent a.s.a.?
p.s.
Part of the charm in this shot for me is it's a nice puzzle to find the bow. It COULD be pointing left.

Thanks for you kind words Cindi, I'm glad you enjoyed the picture. I was standing on a wharf some distance away. I was using my Sigma 300mm F2.8 lens with a 2x converter. Added to this the 1.5 multiplyer effect of the D70 sensor size I had an effective focal length of 900 mm. I used a tripod, as I do in most of my work. I find it slows me down and makes me think more about the scene in front of me. Regards John

I am very glad that you listened to your own sensibility and placed the horizon where it belonged. The rule of thirds sometimes makes us place the horizon away from the center, but this view is beautifully balanced. The light on the water is absolute romance. This image is lovely!!
