a common sight in many parts of asia. one thing about the beggars in thailand, they usually aren't aggressive (my experience). in some other countries, they follow you and hound you, sometimes even grabbing you.

good work. james

The way I have done it for years is to simply ask for permission if they say no don't take the photo, its that simple. The problem is that sometimes you change the scene by asking. Most great street photography be it Lee Friedlander or Gary Winogrand or whoever is done without asking permission. I guess its up to each individual photographer.

Yesterday, I saw a male begger with visual impaired sitting on the stool at the second stair in front of the market; a stand with a tray stood in front of him for collecting money. I had an impulse to give him 20 dollars of our money to ask him if I could take his photo. But finally, I gave him some change and walked away. Because second thought was that you never know what his reaction for your request. To me, I would have had no loss, but for him... Taking others' perspective is necessary especially when we use your camera for your own purpose. I want to hear others comment on this issue. --Eric

Brad..yes I relize that many people in Thailand borrow children for begging, I have seen it happen. In this case I doubt it, I talked to the lady in Thai and she seemed genuine and the way the her children(another child not in the shot)responded to her I believe they were really her children and not rented/borrowed.

Brad mentioned that many people in Thailand use children for begging. I have heard many Thais use this is a rational for NOT giving money. Yes its true that in some cases children are borrowed/rented for begging purposes. In the case of this photo thou I doubt it I talked to the lady(in the thai language)and I believed she told me the truth and the child was her real daughter.

A number of the beggers borrow children to make passers by feel more sorry for them. I have also seen Beggers with children, puppies, and eating Macdonalds (expensive in Thailand)

Excellent moving image. Was this taken on Silom Road by chance?
