Debbie, I had the same thought as Mary Sue on the crop. Sometimes square is ok and even better. But it is also nice this way.

You are right...I tried it, but it didn't balance well at all. Something about the green in the corner pulled it out of whack for me. You are right about the crop :)

Hi Mary Sue,

It's great to hear from you:) Yes I did the crop job:) The crop seemed to make the image IMO seem to be to square? If you would like to try to crop it and repost it for a 'look see'...that would be fine with me:)

Debbie, the strong contrast really works here. I wonder if you tried cropping the negative space on the bottom, just to the edge of the lower petals. I'm not sure if that would crowd the flower, or if it would balance with the crop on the other 3 sides. Doing that would add a visual diagonal to this image.

Oh, also, I shot this picture at an angle as it was low on the ground and I was crouced down...but not 'level' with the flower...thus cozing the one flower being more in focus than the other one.

Thank you ladies for your comments on this 'beautiful' flower. I only had to add a little contrast to have the flower as they say..'pop' out:) As for the black background..the background is truly black. I did clone a couple of extra leaves from the image using the background color to cover them. I left the one green leaf for added color. Yes the middle stems are a bit soft. Darn it! The reason I say this is beacuse on the origingal scan you can definetly see the curly stems that I thought were delightful. I did use f/22 and a DOF preview button before taking the picture...but at the time I did not have my tripod set up when I saw this flower...:(

Sensational shot! I don't know how you did it - I always get poor definition with very red or very purple flowers. The contrast between the red and black here is outstanding. The center of the middle flower is a little blurry compared to the one in the top right, but the petals . . . wow!

Hi lassitude. It was really GREAT to hear from you:) I seem to be partial to red flowers:). I love all flowers but red seems to always catch my eye. Perhaps the brightness of them? Thank you for taking time to comment on this paticular one:)
