Holey Smoley! Great photograph! You give us an evocative story. The backlighting works very well in this -- making the swan appear even more mystical. The posture of your brother makes in pensive, wondering -- eventhough we view him from the back.

David, I have just read Joan's poem, so beautiful, just like this photo! Very evocative, just superb work....I also love swans, & have taken many photos of them, but that great one eludes me! But I shall keep trying as long as I am able......
Regards, John.

Joan, this is a very beautiful poem and I am so glad to see it at last. I have had a great curiosity about his ever since you mentioned it, but began to wonder whether I would ever see it. I don't know why you have had problems getting through to me at my e.mail address - perhaps it is a local hiccup. And on my side I have been unable to contact you because you do not publish your address here. I have another address which you might wish to note: dacapouk@yahoo.co.uk -should you wish to contact me again. I have now read through this twice and it is a work to savour slowly because its imagery is so complex and many-layered. Its rewards are many. Swans have been potent symbols in literature and art through the ages and it is easy to see why - their uncommon beauty and grace. I have encountered swans often in life and art and I am delighted that your work is now a living part of my experience. I am very honoured that my image inspired you to write such a fine poem. Thank you, and best wishes. David

David...for starters, your email does not work. It has bounced back to me several times. I am not an photographer but a writer. This particular piece so captivated me that I wrote about it and wanted to get it to you. I sent my work to the editor of the site but I do not know if he was successful in reaching you... So, because I am woman of determination, I am going to try and cut and paste the work here:
A SWAN AND A MAN
The day we met autumn was kissing Gently goodbye to the fall. Today my usual walk from the pond Was nothing unusual at all.
Yet you, on your lonely path Were heading aimlessly downstream, Disturbing fermenting, layered leaves A wooded glen, your place to dream.
I, on the other hand, Had wandered far from shore to land Never expecting to find you here, A kind and soulful man.
But here we are So far from our realms Today we meet face to face. A chance meeting of a lifetime In a wooded, secluded place. We are different Ah ?tis true Time-drawn together Yes me and you.
Beckoned from uncommon worlds Drawn from distant shores Granted only moments in time Before time itself, closes its solid door.
Man, if you show me your land I will show you my sea We will dive to the depths Of my pond you and me.
Hold your breath like I do I have done so all my life It is important to my survival, No one knows a real swan?s life.
Man, show me the tree tops Explain the tree?s thick roots. Tell me, why am I web-footed Why do you wear high those topped boots?
Swan, where are your arms What do you do with white feathered wings? How do you spend your days at the pond? Does a swan dream man?s dreams?
Man you do you sleep in a house With a fire in the hearth? I sleep huddled with many As a ship moored at berth.
A swan and a man Who would have thought such a pair? You and I sitting high on rocks for hours Laughter slicing through thick morning air.
****
Man, today my friends are leaving I must travel with them too. I would love to stay with you forever Yet we are different, yes me and you.
I must live my life upon the water You must live your life upon the land. We have had our days of fun and laughter We must part now, do you understand?
Man, my eyes are dry and always open Yet today your eyes are clouded and far from dry. For the first time a swan?s heart is breaking For the first time I saw a grown man cry?

I was so taken by this photograph that I wrote a poem for it. I tried shipping it to you via the email address listed but it was returned as undeliverable. If you could update your email address that would be wonderful and I will send you the piece. I know you will enjoy it. Thank you for capturing such a beautiful moment, even so long ago.
With kindest regards Joan Austin, USA

If it weren't for the dark bulk of the tree this image would feel far too central however, the tree pulls on the dreaminess of the image and leads us "Into the Woods." The fairy tale sometimes turns dark and this image shows us both sides imo.
Mary
ps the creaminess of this image is fascinating...

Hi David, I just read your post in the forum on critiquing. I really agree with what you said, and am glad I clicked on your link. I look forward to going through your portfolio when time permits. In the meantime, this one particularly caught my eye. I sometimes find it hard to express in words why I like something (and that may be why we sometimes leave a comment like "wow"). I think this image is breathtaking! It has such a dimensional look with the dark tones at the front and the fading lighter tones toward the back. And the subject matter is just so fanciful and perfect. Nice to meet you! Donna J

Atmosphere here is just fantastic. So strong but so sensitive. I would only prefere more top, less bottom (about 1 cm). It's fabulous. Tritones works well! Bye, Igor

Beautiful, well positioned, and very akin to the fairy tale world as suggested by TL .... but with such strong light, where are the shadows? No matter, I love the look of this one. It could be a painting, and probably should be.
