good reflection shot, Christine. The DOF works well to bring focus to the rocks and the yellow grass really frames it up well. I liked studying this picture. It just was kind of relaxing. Who'd have thought that of rocks?

I like this one. The clarity and intensity of the colors is enough to convince me. I wish the red strip of grass was continuous all the way to the left border. That white patch of light really sets it all off. Excellent choice of matting. What's interesting is there isn't anything to give it a sense of scale, so it can be anything from a little tiny canal to an ocean jetty.
Hi Christine! I'm back online. I tried to email you this long letter, but it was returned to me with an error message saying that your email wasn't working? Well, the tech confirmed that it was a hack job. The hard drive was defective, which explained why my printer couldn't print the last 3 weeks. I thought the ink cartridges were low. I ended up with a $170 labor bill for 2 hours' work, and $95 for a 40 gig HD. What a ripoff. He threw in Photoshop 7 (yipee!), a corporate level antivirus software, and a new firewall. Had no choice but to use him. Everybody else was too busy to work on my pc. Gosh, would've been great to have you come over to fix it. Now that the pc's fixed, I broke my finger. Specifically the tendon in my right ring finger lifting a heavy bag over my head. It slipped, shifted right, and bent the fingers of my right hand to the right. I heard a snap like cracking one's knuckles. I looked at my hand because one of my fingers felt funny and numb. It was bent a little to the right. Later it bent down like a claw or hammer. Didn't hurt, though. I knew it was a tendon because it didn't hurt. I was an xray technologist for 13 years so I know something about fractures. Doctor put it in a splint for 3 weeks. If it doesn't straighten out (weld itself back in), he will have the orthopedic surgeon go in and suture the tendon back. Without the splint, the very end of the finger bends down, called hammer bend, he called it. It doesn't hurt much, just a level 1 out of 10. So far, my record of never breaking a bone in my body still stands, thank God. My camera grip's not all that good, so I'm toting around my micro 110. I can still type (awkwardly) as you can see. LOL. Wish me luck, won't you? I need it! LOLOL. Mark

Good composition with a nice relection and good lighting. I like the brown grass in the foreground. Maybe add a bit of contrast to bring it out some. Overall good capture.

Matej, yes, I scanned over the Neat Image info. It looks like something I would be interested in.
I'll send you an email tonight from home about the sharpening tip. Thanks!

Have you checked out Matt Hardy's article on NeatImage use in the Articles section here at Usefilm? It might help you with the grain/noise problem. Also e-mail me for a sharpening technique.

Hi Jamie,
I had a hard time sharpening this one. My scanner turns out softer images with obvious grain (which seems to translate into noise). I ran the Sharpen More on it after I cleaned up some dust but before I reduced the size. Then after reducing, I adjusted the brightness a little, masked out the foreground & background and ran the Sharpen > Fade Sharpen on just the rocks. I didn't want to add any additional noise to the grasses in front and the reflection seemed fine. I can see an obvious line where I masked out the background, but failed to notice it last night (probably eyestrain from looking at a monitor all day, I start seeing double too...)
If you have any good sharpening tips, I'd love to hear them! I find that what works for one picture doesn't always work on the next so I'm always looking for different techniques!

This is one of those rather deceptive thumbnails that hides a much better shot than I first thought. Its lovely and sharp and that reflection is brilliant. Think your PS sharpening could be worked on, what technique did you use?

Brian, I like the color of the rock in your photo. The ones around the marina were mostly black, white and tan, no pretty colors.
Nicole, the rocks are medium sized. I noticed the same thing after I added the border; it looked like a pile of small stones. I've attached a similar picture to this one that I took right after. It has more perspective and it's easier to see that these aren't pebbles ;-)

Neat image. what is funny is that it is hard to tell if it is an image of large boulders or little rocks.

I like your photo it is similar to a photo I took recently, note the colour of the rock it is mixed with a high concentrate of iron ore. This photo was taken in Labrador City NL.
